The Qualities of Skillful Leadership

If you want to be a leader who attracts quality people, the key is to become a person of quality yourself. Leadership is the ability to attract someone to the gifts, skills, and opportunities you offer as an owner, as a manager, as a parent. I call leadership the great challenge of life.

What's important in leadership is refining your skills. All great leaders keep working on themselves until they become effective. Here are some specifics:

1) Learn to be strong but not rude. It is an extra step you must take to become a powerful, capable leader with a wide range of reach. Some people mistake rudeness for strength. It's not even a good substitute.

2) Learn to be kind but not weak. We must not mistake kindness for weakness. Kindness isn't weak. Kindness is a certain type of strength. We must be kind enough to tell somebody the truth. We must be kind enough and considerate enough to lay it on the line. We must be kind enough to tell it like it is and not deal in delusion.

3) Learn to be bold but not a bully. It takes boldness to win the day. To build your influence, you've got to walk in front of your group. You've got to be willing to take the first arrow, tackle the first problem, discover the first sign of trouble.

4) You've got to learn to be humble, but not timid. You can't get to the high life by being timid. Some people mistake timidity for humility. Humility is almost a God-like word. A sense of awe. A sense of wonder. An awareness of the human soul and spirit. An understanding that there is something unique about the human drama versus the rest of life. Humility is a grasp of the distance between us and the stars, yet having the feeling that we're part of the stars. So humility is a virtue; but timidity is a disease. Timidity is an affliction. It can be cured, but it is a problem.

5) Be proud but not arrogant. It takes pride to win the day. It takes pride to build your ambition. It takes pride in community. It takes pride in cause, in accomplishment. But the key to becoming a good leader is being proud without being arrogant. In fact, I believe the worst kind of arrogance is arrogance from ignorance. It's when you don't know that you don't know. Now that kind of arrogance is intolerable. If someone is smart and arrogant, we can tolerate that. But if someone is ignorant and arrogant, that's just too much to take.

6) Develop humor without folly. That's important for a leader. In leadership, we learn that it's okay to be witty, but not silly. It's okay to be fun, but not foolish.

Lastly, deal in realities. Deal in truth. Save yourself the agony. Just accept life like it is. Life is unique. Some people call it tragic, but I'd like to think it's unique. The whole drama of life is unique. It's fascinating. And I've found that the skills that work well for one leader may not work at all for another. But the fundamental skills of leadership can be adapted to work well for just about everyone: at work, in the community, and at home.

These ten steps will help you achieve your goals in 2009.

1. Make the commitment to reach your goal. "One person with a commitment is worth a hundred who only have an interest." Mary Crowley.

2. Commit yourself to detailed accountability. Record your progress toward your goals every night, and list the six most important things you need to do the next day. Daily discipline is the key to reaching your goals.

3. Build your life on a sold foundation of honesty, character, integrity, trust, love, and loyalty. This foundation will give you an honest shot at reaching any goal you have set properly.

4. Break your intermediate and long-range goals into increments.

5. Be prepared to change. You can't control the weather, inflation, interest rates, Wall Street, etc. Change your decision to move toward a goal carefully--but be willing to change your direction to get there as conditions and circumstances demand.

6. Share your "give-up" goals (i.e., give up smoking, being rude, procrastinating, being late, eating too much, etc.) with many people. Chances are excellent they're going to encourage you.

7. Become a team player. Remember: You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.

8. See the reaching. In your imagination see yourself receiving that diploma, getting that job or promotion, making that speech, moving into the home of your dreams, achieving that weight-loss goal, etc.

9. Each time you reach a goal your confidence will grow so that you can do bigger and better things. After accomplishing any goal, record it in your journal, Weekly Planner or Palm Pilot.

10. Remember, what you get by reaching your destination isn't nearly as important as what you become by reaching your goals--what you will become is the winner you were born to be!

One of the best ways to influence someone is to do something nice for him. I know many successful salespeople who make a habit of taking their prospects out to breakfast or lunch. During the breakfast or lunch, they do not talk about their products or services unless the client brings it up. They merely make small talk, ask questions and listen. They work on building trust, and they work on establishing a friendly relationship. At the end of the breakfast or lunch, they tell the prospect that they will be getting in touch with him sometime in the future with the possibility of talking to him about helping him in some way.

See Them As Friends and Partners

The best salespeople and businesspeople in America today are those who look upon their customers and prospective customers as friends and partners. Experts tips for buying and cooking a tasty turkey.

Thanksgiving Day is a time-honored American tradition, a time for family gatherings and a holiday meal that encourages over-the-top decadence. And for many (some 97% of us), the thought of a Thanksgiving without turkey is heresy. We gobble up roughly 45 million turkeys to celebrate the annual holiday.

To help make sure your Thanksgiving dinner is safe, nutritious, and delicious, we asked the experts for some timely turkey tips.
A Little Background

The tom turkey, the larger male bird decorated with colorful plumage, has a long wattle -- a fleshy, wrinkled fold of skin hanging down from the throat -- and is known for his trademark "gobble." The hens are smaller and less colorful than the males, and make only a clicking sound.

Both males and females are raised extensively for their excellent meat (and for eggs). The most common breeds in the United States are the Bronze, Narragansett, White Holland, and Bourbon Red.

We've all heard the legend about the first Thanksgiving: After a tough first year in America in 1621, the Pilgrims celebrated a successful fall harvest of fruits, corn, and other vegetables. They had beaten the odds, and for that, they were mighty thankful. The Pilgrims' Governor William Bradford proclaimed a day to give thanks that was shared by the new colonists and their Native American neighbors.

The tradition continued each year after the harvest, and in the late 1770s, the Continental Congress suggested a national Thanksgiving day. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday. (President Franklin D. Roosevelt later declared that the holiday would be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.)

Turkey Prep 101

For most of us, there's no doubt that a turkey will be the centerpiece of our Thanksgiving feast. The only question: Should we buy it fresh or frozen?

Frozen birds tend to be less expensive, but they require more time to defrost properly.

"If you have the room to defrost a frozen turkey in your refrigerator, plan on one day to thaw [each] 4-5 pounds," recommends culinary nutritionist Jackie Newgent. Place the wrapped bird on a tray on the bottom shelf of your refrigerator so the juices won't contaminate other foods.

Another safe method of defrosting is to submerge the bird, breast side down, in cold water, and change the water every 30 minutes. With this method, thawing takes approximately 30 minutes per pound.

"Defrosting in the sink is time-consuming, and if you don't change the water to keep it cold, you risk the chance of bacterial contamination," advises Newgent.

For purists, nothing can compare with the mouth-watering aromas of slowly roasting a turkey to golden perfection in the oven. Deep-frying is a popular alternative cooking method, though it requires the right equipment and lots of oil.
If you prefer the crispy fried version, don't worry about the extra fat calories, says registered dietitian Newgent: "Thanksgiving only happens once a year, so just go for it and enjoy!"

Some basic turkey-cooking tips:

Buy 1 pound of turkey per person. That will allow plenty for the feast and leftovers, too.

Make sure the bird is completely thawed before cooking; otherwise, it will not cook uniformly.

Cook the turkey to the proper temperature. A meat thermometer is the only way to ensure proper cooking to 180 degrees. Place the thermometer deep into the thigh, without touching the bone.

Slowly cooking the turkey at 325 degrees will result in the most moist and delicious meat. Higher temperatures can overcook or dry out the bird.

Rub the bird with olive oil and season lightly with salt, pepper, onion and garlic powders, and a little sage. The rest of the meal is so flavorful that you shouldn't overpower the bird with heavy seasonings, Newgent says.

Baste oven-baked birds with their juices and a little butter for added moistness and rich color.

Cover the drumsticks and breast with foil when the bird is two-thirds done to prevent drying and scorching.

Plan to take advantage of all cooking surfaces when you prepare the meal. Use shallow baking dishes that fit on an oven shelf under the turkey. Prepare other dishes on the stovetop and in the microwave.

Safety First

It's always important to follow safe food handling practices to reduce the risk of food-borne illness. This year, consumers may also be worried about the potential for bird flu in their turkeys. But the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service reassures us that bird flu (avian influenza) is not transmissible by eating poultry.

The real concern, as always, is viruses and bacterial contamination. So keep these safety tips in mind on Thanksgiving (and anytime you're preparing food):

Wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling food.

Prevent cross-contamination by keeping raw foods separate from cooked foods.

Wash hands, cutting boards, utensils, sink, countertops and anything that comes in contact with raw turkey with hot, soapy water.

Sanitize cutting boards with a weak bleach solution (1 teaspoon bleach in 1 quart water).

To Stuff or Not to Stuff?

In many families, stuffing the bird has long been the preferred method of cooking. But the Department of Agriculture advises against this practice because of the risk of food-borne illness.

"It is difficult for the stuffing to reach the internal temperature of 165 degrees even when the meat is done," warns Diane Van, USDA meat and poultry hotline manager.

So instead of putting the stuffing inside the bird, experts advise, cook it separately in a casserole dish.
Cooking Time

The National Turkey Federation and USDA suggest following these guidelines -- along with using a meat thermometer -- when roasting an unstuffed bird:

8-12 pounds: 2 3/4 to 3 hours
12-14 pounds: 3 to 3 3/4 hours
14-18 pounds: 3 3/4 to 4 1/4 hours
18-20 pounds: 4 1/4 to 4 1/2 hours
20-24 pounds: 4 1/2 to 5 hours

Look slowly around you. All that you see at this moment was one day but someone's dream - a "seedling of the reality" it was to become. In our lifetime we have benefited greatly from the dreams of so many.

Mandela, Mother Teresa, Einstein, Gandhi, Spielberg, Disney, Gates and the list could go on and on and on -- all began with a dream. Who could forget one of the most powerful speeches of all time by Dr. Martin Luther King, "I Have a Dream". While we haven't become the color-blind society we should be, go back and read the speech and see how far we've come since Dr. King first spoke those "seedlings" into reality.

At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Celine Dion performed a song called The Power of the Dream.

"Deep within each heart,
There lies a magic spark,
That lights the fire of our imagination…

Your mind will take you far
The rest is just pure heart,
You'll find your fate is all your own creation."

Sounds a lot like James Allen, doesn't it?

So maybe you don't see yourself as a Mandela or Mother Teresa. But if you haven't already discovered it, deep inside you there is a dream. It was put there by the one who created you, as we are told in Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Ralph Marston, whose Daily Motivator has brightened my day for some time now, writes, "On a regular basis, take time to imagine the very best that life can be. Step aside for a moment from the day-to-day concerns of life. Re-establish contact with your highest goals and most treasured dreams. Remind yourself of the beautiful possibilities that life holds for you. Renew your determination to bring them to fruition.

"Spend some quality time with your dreams. They are real to the extent that you value them. To the extent that you commit to them and work for them, they will come true."

The final verse of Celine's song ends with:

"There's so much strength in all of us,
Every woman, child and man,
It's the moment that you think you can't,
You'll discover that you can."

And that's worth thinking about.

Elements of Change

The key to achieving more than you currently are, no matter which area of your life or work you are focusing in on now, is change. The old saying rings true: If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you've already got. If you keep eating and exercising the way you currently are, you will weigh the same a year from now. If you continue to sell to the same people on the same schedule, you will make the same amount of money next year. In order to move forward, we must change.

As I have worked with people, both in a professional setting and on a personal basis, I have found two things to be true about change. One, it is simple. Two, it is not easy. That is, the concept of change is simple to grasp. People or organizations are quick to say, "Oh, I know we need to change." Simple.

But where the problem starts, and why most people and organizations do not change, is because it is not easy to change. But, I believe, if the process is well thought out, and if we have the guts and determination to carry it out, change can happen, and we can move on to more fulfilled lives.

With that said, let me give you what I consider the elements of change.

Discontentment with your current state. The first step in the process of change is to not want to be where you currently are. You must be discontent with it. If you are overweight, you must say, "I will not accept this anymore." If you are in debt, you must say, "I cannot tolerate this any longer." If you have broken relationships, you must say, "I will not live with this." This is a decision to change and not accept the status-quo.

The picture of your preferred outcome. What is it that you want to change to? It absolutely is not enough to say "I need to change." It must be: "I am going to change to..." This becomes the goal. I would encourage you to get a mental picture of it formulated in your mind. Get a real picture of it if it is that tangible. Perhaps write yourself a short essay, extolling the virtues of what life will be like when you get to the changed state.

New associations with the two states. You must begin to associate your current state you are in with pain, and the state you want to be in with pleasure. Let's take weight for example. We tend to think of ice cream, mounds of it, with pleasure. I know that I do. Especially chocolate chip mint. At a friend's house recently, we had some ice cream. Normal portions. I don't like to eat normal portions. I like huge portions of ice cream. There is an association of pleasure there. But what I did to overcome the urge to eat scoop after scoop was to associate huge portions to being overweight, not the pleasure of the taste. I also associated not eating the ice cream with feeling better about myself. Then when it comes to exercise, I work on associating the exercise and weight-lifting with the pleasure of fitting into my clothes rather than the pain my muscles feel every time I do it. This help me win the battle of the mind.

Develop a plan of short, simple steps. "I am going to lose fifty pounds in two months." "I will sell 500% more next month." These are examples of change that are good goals to have long term, but too big for the time allotted - and this is havoc on change! If your goals are too big in too short of time, you will fail and become discouraged. Then you will quit and decide change can't be accomplished. Instead, you must have short, workable, attainable goals if you are going to see real change happen and stay. "I am going to lose five pounds a month for ten months." "We are going to sell 6% more each month this year (That would double your business each year)" These are the size steps you need to take. Then you will build victory after victory.

Discipline yourself. Sorry but this is where it is up to you. At the heart of change is the ability to discipline ourselves. I cannot lose your weight. Your mom cannot go out and make sales calls for you. The only real obstacle standing between your current state and your desired outcome is you! So do everything you can to get yourself motivated to change! Force yourself to get out of bed and get to work on your goals! Discipline yourself. Choose to make the right decision.

Reward yourself when you have made the change. That's right: reward yourself. You have worked hard and exerted a lot of self-discipline to get there! You deserve it!

The most successful business leaders today are like great coaches who manage by inspiration, instead of intimidation. The command and control, management style is obsolete. In this fast forward global marketplace, there is no such distinction as superior and subordinate. The key to getting and staying on top is to provide a resilient, positive working environment. This requires that you "check your ego at the door" and that you seek alliances with others who may have different talents or strengths than you do. This is what synergy is all about.

David Ogilvy, founder of giant advertising agency, Ogilvy and Mather, used to give each new manager a Russian doll, which contained five progressively smaller dolls inside. A message inside the smallest one read: "If each of us hires people we consider smaller than ourselves, we shall become a company of dwarves. But if each of us hires people who are bigger than we are, we will become a company of giants."

To become a giant in the eyes of others, and to succeed in the 21st century, look up to those beneath you! Consider these action ideas as you lead your team:

1. Listen often and openly to what others say, and try to do so without prejudgment.

2. Don't put anyone off or be too busy to listen to and answer questions.

3. Use praise frequently and sincerely.

4. If you feel that criticism is warranted, do it in private, and make sure you say something encouraging after the reprimand.

5. Be firm and be fair. Don't meet with people in person or on the phone when you are angry. Exercise or take a walk first, then communicate when you are relaxed.

6. Don't be afraid or hesitant to share your concerns with others. Far better to discuss a molehill, then to wait until it festers into Mt. Everest.

7. Don't make rash promises and be consistent.

8. Whenever you are in a leadership role, focus your supervision on teaching effective habits and skills, not in pointing out mistakes.

Become a Student of Change

As the world becomes more interconnected, events outside your industry and career have an impact on your business, your family and your pocketbook. Whatever your daily routine, it takes place in a larger context of social, technological, political, economic and cultural change. To be successful today, you must understand that world. Without that you won´t be prepared to innovate; you´ll only be able to react and to avoid.

Many people will tell you it doesn´t matter how well-informed you are. You can´t do anything about it anyway,’ goes the refrain, so why bother to find out about things?’ Here´s a newspaper editorial that sums up this attitude:

The world is too big for us. Too much going on, too much crime, violence and change. Try as you will, you get behind in the race. It´s an incessant strain to keep pace and still you lose ground. Science empties its discoveries on you so fast that you stagger beneath them in hopeless bewilderment. Everything in business and life is high pressure. Human nature can´t endure much more!’

This newspaper editorial reads as if it were written last week. But it actually appeared more than 168 years ago on June 16, 1833 in The Atlantic Journal back in the good old days!’

How can you avoid becoming a casualty of the bad new days? Take the offensive. Instead of stewing, start doing. Pay attention to the early warning signs of change. Look for changes in your industry, your family life and your region. You cannot innovate if your understanding of change is misinformed, incomplete or outdated.

Success in the new era is heavily dependent upon innovation, creativity and solving problems for which there are no precedents. While new technology is often the driver of economic and social change, the real opportunities are created by individuals who apply technology in new ways. Fred Smith, operating outside of the airline industry, created Federal Express because he saw the trend of speed in delivery of goods and services.

Your success depends on how well you think. You are not paid to collect, sort, store or retrieve information, although you do these things every day. You are paid to interpret that information and create and implement new ideas.

Ask yourself:

What can I offer that they aren´t offering? Where´s the niche that hasn´t been developed? How can I add value to the service or products I promote?

Where is the market inefficiency? What would make this process more convenient? How can I do this less expensively?

What would people pay for that isn´t available now? Which consumer groups and Internet communities are the most likely prospects who want what I provide? What trends will change my and their assumptions about the quality of life?

Charting Your Course to Success

One of the keys to success is to have successful relationships. We are not islands and we don't get to the top by ourselves. And one of the key ways to grow successful in our relationships is to be "life-giving" people to others. With every person we meet, we either give life to or take life from.

You know what I mean. There are people who encourage you and after spending time with them you feel built up. Then there are others who make you feel torn down. Successful people are people who have mastered the art of building up others. This is especially true of our families.

One of the ways we build up our families is to praise them. There is power in praising people! Something begins to happen in them, in you, and in your relationship when you praise someone. Can you remember a time when someone told you something about you in a praising manner? It was great, wasn't it? You probably liked that person more after they praised you, didn't you?

Now I am not talking about praising people for the sake of praising people. I am talking about honestly looking for and praising positive character traits and actions of your spouse and children. Don't lie to them. If they have done something wrong, correct it, but when they do something right, praise it!

With that said, here are benefits of and ways to start praising the people in your family.

Benefits:

Your relationship grows. Life is about relationships--family relationships, friends and co-workers. When we begin to praise people for their positive aspects, our relationships grow. It puts them, and us, on the fast track. Your leadership and influence grows. Who is going to have greater relationships, the one who tears down or the one who builds up?

Stronger relationships and loyalty. When the person is appreciated and praised, they become fiercely loyal, because they know that you care for them, love them and appreciate them. This will take you to success.

Happier, more fulfilled people. I truly believe it is our job to build the members of our family up and that they need it. There will always be others who come along to tear them down; it is our job to instill in them the power of praise!

Some Ways to Praise:

Character traits. Is your wife joyful? Is your husband hard-working? Is your son or daughter honest? Then let them know how much you appreciate that in them. Say something like this, "You know Tom, I think it is great that you are such a hard-worker. You really set a good example and I want you to know how much I appreciate that." Simple!

Action. Same idea as above. "Sue, I don't know if I have ever told you this, but I love how you always take action on the things you believe in. Thanks for that."

Other ways you can show praise and appreciation is with a card or a gift.

Make it your goal to praise every member of your family at least once each day. If you can, praise them a few times a day. It will take work but it is possible. It just takes discipline and a little work.

Any way you cut it, there is power in praising people. If you are serious about healthy family relationships, this is a great place to start!

Avoid Fair-Weather Supporters

When you seek support and feedback, be sure it is from people who are truly interested in seeing you succeed. Don't seek feedback from fair-weather friends, competitive peers, or any person who doesn't have your best interests at heart. Neutral doesn't count. Get feedback from someone who is on your side but will still be objective and brutally honest with you.

Misery truly does love company, and jealousy creates some of the most miserable people. Surpass the achievements of your particular social crowd or your business colleagues, and look out for the slings and arrows of those who wish you were back where they are.

You have to dodge the snide remarks and catty comments. Let them roll right off you. Don't internalize them. Only pay attention to feedback from those who have similar goals or who are working actively alongside you to achieve goals of their own.

Motives and fears run deep. Study them in others. The manager who supports you and comforts you when you're down may like you best when you are in just that state: down and dependent. When you start succeeding beyond his expectations and comfort level, he may be among the first to get you to back off, limit your horizons, and lower your goals. Recognize this feedback for the insecurity it is. It will rarely be objective or well-intentioned.

Even parents and significant family members aren't immune to emotional conflicts that can pollute their feedback. Many relatives and siblings have difficulty accepting the success of others in the family or encouraging further success.

Ultimately, nobody else is responsible for your life but you. Nobody else is accountable for your actions but you. Therefore, nobody's expectations for you and opinions about you are as important as your own. So make sure your opinions take precedence in your mind over all others, and when you do need to consult with someone else, think very carefully before you choose exactly who.

2) What you believe about your worth as a person,

3) How you expect others to accept you,

4) What you believe you can become,

5) What you expect your world to be like,

6) What you believe about how you came into existence. Most of us have three separate self-images, which include:

The “me” I really am (your true potential) .

The “me” I think I am (this depends on how well you know yourself).

The “me” I want to become (can expand as you learn your true potential).

Key #4: The Motivation of Goal Setting. Turning your dreams into reality.

According to this author, a survey taken a few years ago revealed that only three percent of people have written down their goals and are working toward them. Another ten percent, equally as well educated and determined, do a great deal of thinking about their goals but they have not written them down. The first group outperformed the second group by anywhere from ten to 100 times. Unwritten goals are hazy goals and produce at best, hazy results. A written goal keeps you on track, serves as a checkpoint, and protects you from being overwhelmed by outside distractions. There are four types of goals that are discussed in this chapter. Short range goals range from today to six months from now.

Focusing on the daily actions necessary to accomplish your goals will help you internalize the process. Long range goals range from one year to a lifetime and express your purpose for living. Tangible goals are needs and wants, such as increased income a new possession, or a trip. These are goals which you can see and touch. Intangible goals affect your personal character, and can be spiritual, mental, or emotional. Usually, the attainment of an intangible goal, such as a change in a particular character trait, precedes the reaching of a tangible goal.

Key #5: Choices and Consequences. Saying “yes” also means saying “no”.

Choices have consequences, whether good or bad. This may seem obvious, but people fail to grasp this reality. Winning and academic scholarship, reaching a sales goal, or making a wise investment could be termed “rewards,” “profits,” or even “luck,” but they are merely the consequences of making right choices. The natural principle of sowing and reaping is always at work. Whatever you plant, whether physical, spiritual, mental, financial, relational, or emotional will grow and some day return to you in a multiplied fashion. It can be incredibly good or terribly bad, depending on your seed.

Key #6: If You Don’t Have Discipline, You Don’t Have Anything. Why discipline is paramount to your success.

Without discipline, no plan can possibly succeed. Having the discipline to follow through is what brings great plans to pass. Mr. Meyer discusses five components of discipline in this chapter. They are: firm values, setting challenging goals, clear priorities, persistence, and personal inspiration.

Key #7: The Importance of Priorities. Because you live according to your priorities.

Priorities don’t just need to be set, they also need to be kept. If you say that your family is one of your main priorities, but you spend nearly all of your waking hours at work, or bring work home with you, where does that say your priorities really lie? The author gives a list of 13 steps to keeping priorities.

Key #8: My Word Is My Bond. Why keeping your word is absolutely invaluable.

People believe and trust Paul Meyer, because he keeps his word. He doesn’t just say things, he actually does what he says he will do. Whenever he makes a promise to anyone, he writes it down and puts it in a vault. At the end of every year, he updates his will and incorporates these promises, and removes the ones he has already fulfilled. Can you imagine what this world would be like if everyone kept his word? (Lawyers would be out of business!)

Key #9: Integrity: It’s All You Are. If all you have is integrity, you have more than enough.

Integrity includes such traits as taking responsibility, being honest, keeping your word, and being faithful in the little things. Compromising integrity can, and often does, bring short-term gains, but they will inevitably turn into long-term losses. People respect, trust and want to do business with a person who has high standards of integrity.

Accelerate Your Success Abilities

In today's fast-paced life, the wins usually go to those with exceptional skills and abilities. The old quote is true, "The race is not always won by the swift and the strong, but that is the way to bet."

With this in mind, and with your desire to become increasingly successful, here are some ways to accelerate your abilities, thus enabling you to achieve greater and greater things.

Become dissatisfied with your current state. Growth for growth's sake is good. Those who will achieve much are those who say to themselves, "I want to grow. I want to be better. And I am willing to do what it takes to get there. This current state is not enough!" This dissatisfaction will create for you an insatiable drive to do what it takes to get your abilities to the next level.

Visualize the benefits of increased abilities. Put them at the forefront of your mind. This will saturate your mind with the motivation that it will take for you to do what it takes to increase your abilities. What good will come out of my increased ability? How will I be better off as well as the others around me? The answers to these questions act as the carrot before the horse, moving you forward.

Understand your weaknesses. If you want to improve, one of the best ways is to start with some area that you aren't particularly good at. This is the "shoring up method." Sometimes it is easier to improve something you aren't good at than something you are. And the gains will still look great for your overall situation! Take some time to consider what areas you are weakest in and focus in on them for a while. The results will obviously be much more pronounced than getting better at something you have already somewhat mastered.

Attempt greater levels of what you are already good at. Another tact to take would be to stretch yourself in an area that you already have some skill and ability in. What areas do you excel in? Now understand that when you leave the weaker areas weak and make extraordinary gains in one area, then you will be moving more toward "specialist" rather than "generalist." That is okay, but needs to fit in with your overall goals.

Commit time each day to improvement. Steady improvement is the way to go. In fact, you may not see improvement for days or weeks. You may feel like you are failing each time. But alas, eventually you will get it and your skill will increase to the next level. The key is day in, day out, spending time working on improving. Even five minutes a day equals a half hour a week, 2 hours a month. That adds up! Remember, Practice, practice, practice.

Seek out and spend time with someone who has greater ability than you. One of the best things to do to increase your ability is hang out with people who are already more skilled than you. Watching, them, studying them, interacting with them, even competing with them will make you better. As in sports, to improve, you play with people better than you, not worse. They will raise you to a new level. Who around you can you get involved with who will help you with your ability?

Take a class or hire a coach. Go to school my friend. Take a course at a local college or vocational institute. Take a class online. Hire one of the many coaches available today. Pick a specific skill you would like to improve upon and find someone who is a specialist in that area. At the very least, pick up some audio or videotapes to help you grow.

Be the tortoise, not the hare. Slow but sure. Take your time, do it right. Keep going in the right direction. Learn your craft correctly. Don't give up quality for speed. The whole idea of acceleration is this way: Slow start, work up to high speeds, go the distance. Luckily life isn't a sprint but a marathon!

The Late-Starting Millionaire

My hope for this article is it will make some of you think about the distant future of your life. When we are young, we don’t often think about preparing for our later years. You are very lucky if your parents, or grandparents, are able to and think about beginning some kind of regular investment or saving plan for you. It’s very rare for anyone under 30 to consider building wealth for the future. Even those in the financial business often neglect the serious requirement to plan for their own financial future. This is a terrible mistake. They have the best advisors anyone could want but still don’t take advantage of what is available.

According to this article by Gauruv Mashruwala, Warren Buffett did as he was supposed to do. He purchased his first stock at the age of 11 and two years later announced to his family he would be a millionaire by age 30. This he did, but what a statement from someone only 13 years old! He had many other goals and the knowledge to propel him a lot farther from just a millionaire into the billions bracket. The way he started, however, is how it should be done.

There are several ways to become a millionaire; a few will work no matter how old you are. The very best way to acquire wealth is the old fashioned way, to inherit it. There is no way to plan for this; it is usually due to the accident of birth. Rarely does one inherit from non-relatives, but it requires no effort and no planning. Effort and planning becomes necessary only after receiving the wealth in whatever form.

And then there is the lottery, or any other form of gambling. The problem here is that it may become an addiction and you will almost certainly incur substantial losses. There are a few professional poker players and other professional gamblers who seem not to be affected by any of these problems, but most people should avoid these activities. If you want to support education with an occasional lottery ticket, go for it. Your winning chances are just as poor as everyone else’s.

Then, you could invent a product for a mass market that absolutely must have your product or service. Apple’s iPod and iPhone are two of this kind of product. Every entrepreneur hopes for this kind of success, but there aren’t too many Steven Jobses out there. You certainly should aspire to do these things, but don’t put off a plan to accumulate wealth for you and your family until you complete development and marketing of your new product.

Your home-based business may have been built on filling some important niche not served by many other businesses. This is one of the best ways to become self-employed according to most consultants who specialize in new business formation. The thought is if you find a significant need and fill it, you can get just about anything you want. This is true, but you may pay a price. If your business requires you to spend many hours looking after all the details of daily operation, you could jeopardize all the reasons you went into your own business to start with—things like more time for your family, less stress, and financial security. At some point you may come to consider the question, “Is it worth it?”

Now we come to the common denominator of wealth acquisition: SAVING. This will not be so difficult once you begin a regular plan and execute it for a few months. It does require eliminating some things that bring instant gratification. Our society is built on short attention spans and satisfying our every desire immediately. To deny these social pressures requires determination and developing and practicing a regular plan of action. You must give up something now in order to have in the future. The squirrel who waits until winter to gather nuts will never see another winter!

There are many ways to accumulate funds over years. You could invest in stocks as Warren Buffett did. There are also several kinds of IRA, 401(k) plans at work, and a host of other money-accumulation programs. We will only discuss straight savings here, but you should bear in mind that other forms can add to your savings nest egg. Your savings are insured to a limit of $100,000 in a bank belonging to the FDIC; when you go over that, start with another bank. When you get to your million dollars, you will need more than 10 banks, as we have seen from the recent events in the California area where several banks were closed by the Feds.

The secret of successful saving, after getting into a regular habit, is associated with compound interest. There are many savings calculators available, but the one we will use is MSN Savings calculator. To use this you must choose some interest rate you could reasonably expect to last over the time period when you will be saving. Some of the examples we will mention used pretty high rates; in the tremendous bull stock market we experienced for a few years, along with the rising housing market, some rates of 17% could have seemed reasonable at times. A much more conservative rate of 5 to 6%, however, will cause you to try and save more and will be more realistic in today’s economy. If rates should recover you will be much better off than you intended.

So how much money does the average American save? Liz Pulliam Weston, writing here, reports the following:

Nest egg savings for households in median US income group 2001:
Age 50’s $95,130
Age 60’s $83,400
Age 70’s $62,500

Home equity percent of net worth (median US households, 2001)
Age 50’s about 47%
Age 60’s about 50%
Age 70’s 64%

This means if people sell their homes when they get in these higher age groups, they might approximately double the money available to them, but then where would they live? Consider, at age 50, if you stopped working for some reason like sickness or job termination, you’ve got to make it at least 40 more years; with medical progress as we have had in recent years, some say people could live to be 150! But our 40 year span from age 50 means we would have to get along on $2,378 per year, maybe twice that if you sold your home. Could you do that? Even at age 70, with only about 20 years to go you would have just $3,125 per year. This is serious business!

When you begin saving at the proper time—when you are very young—the effects of inflation should be considered when setting your goals for wealth accumulation. If you just say, “I want a million dollars,” that’s just what you will get, but the money you have then will not buy as much as the money you placed in the fund during earlier years. Inflation has eaten part of your money’s value; do you still have enough to live on? There are calculators you can use to adjust for some assumed inflation rate. Here is a comparison showing how much difference inflation can have on what you must save each month. These figures are based on 8% interest (I previously said 5% or 6% is more conservative) simply for comparative purposes so I don’t have to do the math. Here’s what happens at age 60:

Begin at age 20 and save $286 per month at 8% you will have $1,000,000

Begin at age 30 and save $671 per month at 8% you will have $1,000,000

Begin at age 40 and save $1,698 per month at 8% you will have $1,000,000

Now, assume 3% inflation, and this is what you must do to maintain the same purchasing power:

Begin at age 20 and save $934 per month at 8% (+inflation) you will have $3,262,038

Begin at age 30 and save $1,629 per month at 8% (+inflation) you will have $2,427,262

Begin at age 40 and save $3,066 per month at 8% (+inflation) you will have $1,806,111

You can see the discipline needed to become a millionaire even without adjusting for inflation, but what if you have taken the easy way throughout your life and spent your money on instant gratification rather than future needs? My observation, after some years working with very wealthy people (eight years in banking), is that most affluent people were emotionally attached to the money, not to what it might do for them. Most of them just wanted to “feel” their money. It is obviously a demanding effort to save enough to accumulate a million dollars, so there has to be some emotion involved. But what if you have been emotionally involved with gratification all these years and suddenly you’re 55 with no money saved at all? That’s frightening. What to do?

First, you can forget the million. If you think you can maintain your current earnings until age 75 you will be able to support yourself through part of your “golden years” and maybe put away enough to go on a few years. At 5%, saving $1,000 per month for 20 years, you could accumulate $348,472. This should carry you, with Social Security, for enough years to see you through, but don’t try for 150 years!

That’s an ideal scenario; what if your company wants to get rid of older workers or it just goes out of business? Then what? What do you have left? First is Social Security which will soon be available to you. In this interesting article, Liz Pulliam Weston says a person earning the median US income of $37,198 will be able to replace a little over 41% of regular pay. You probably can get by on this, but not as well as you would like. There are some other things you can do, a few of which require a serious emotional commitment to achieve. Consider these actions you can take.

Look at the job you have now? How secure do you think it is, and for how long will it be available? If you are concerned about any of this, start looking immediately for another position, even if it’s not on quite the same level. Any job is better than no job. Another thing you can do is start a business on the side. The Internet makes this a viable idea in ways that haven’t always been available. Your own home-based business may just save you financially. Finally, don’t plan to retire at 65. Instant gratification has taken away this possibility. This may be a good thing. Many retirees go back into the work force anyway because of boredom. Besides, if you have nothing to do, your mental and physical health may quickly deteriorate It’s not so bad to keep working.

Look at your house. It may be the greatest thing in town, but you are about to run out of enough money to live on, much less maintain a fine home. Determine how much house you really need, sell what you have, and move into the smaller quarters that are adequate. Cutting back on housing expenses before retirement can add dollars to your wealth accumulation. While you are downsizing your home, consider moving to a less expensive area. I did this, and it is surprising how much less it takes to live; in my case living costs are less than one-quarter of what they were in my former location. It can make a big difference.

Something some people nearing retirement do, if they have one or two hundred thousand accumulated, is move to Mexico, or some other place that costs less than the US. There are many places in Mexico where you can live for 60% or less of the US cost. Several problems with this are: Medicare is not available; you may not know the language, you’ll have to make new friends, and there are unpredictable government regulations. Everything, including medical treatment, is generally cheaper there, so it may be possible to increase your monthly Social Security payment by eliminating Medicare. You can learn to speak Spanish. To prevent some government action that affects your money, keep as much as you can in US banks with FDIC insurance. This is one of those actions that require deep emotional involvement.

Saving for a million is a bit discouraging for young people just entering the world of work. I hope the information we’ve discussed will show how serious it can be to neglect saving something every month. Your parents may have worked during a time when employers had retirement plans; these are mostly non existent now. They have been replaced by 401(k) plans, a form of saving through investments. Participate in these to the fullest extent possible, but keep an eye on your plan because you are talking about some kind of stock investment. Most advisors say put aside 10% of your income each month. Assuming average US income about $38,000 annually you need to save, in some way, $3,800 per year which translates to $316 per month. This may seem like a lot to the new employee; DON’T DO NOTHING! Save what you can. $50 a month at 5% starting at age 18 will produce almost $58,000 at age 60; $100 will get you almost $116,000. You can always increase the amount you put in as your income grows.

Some things you can do throughout your life to increase what you have available to save:

1. Spend less than you make and save the extra amount.

2. Stay as near debt free as possible.

You will probably have a home mortgage on a home no larger than you need. If your family grows, trade up or build on when you need it. Don’t buy into the highest priced area; choose the least expensive area you can really enjoy. You also may have to finance your education which is a good investment because it will likely qualify you for a higher –paying career. Perhaps more important are the contacts you will make. Build these social relationships, because they will become your network which may include corporate executives, politicians, investors, and many others who may be able to help each other through life. Maintain this network of relationships.

Help Others Help Yourself

One of my longest standing male friends told me something a few days ago that really bothered me and provided the basis for this article. He said that, for many years, he supported the United Way, various churches, and a lot of local charities with generous donations. But now, after all this time giving to these groups, he said, “I’ve never gotten any benefit from any of them so I’m going to stop supporting them all.” I was distressed. Does my friend really feel when he gives something he expects to get some monetary thing in return? That started my thinking about why any of us do what we do.

What is the reason for any home-based entrepreneur to put in the long hours and assume the sometimes great risks they do? Home-based operators are innovators, described in the dictionary as someone who helps to open up a new line of research, technology, or art. Our businesses all require technology, and the way we present it to our customers involves an element of art. Isn’t a well-designed Website an art form? And there are many reasons we do what we do. Many want to be their own boss, escape office politics and the corporate rat-race, avoid endless traffic congestion, or get rid of health-destroying stress associated with most “real” jobs. Have you thought, however, that in addition to all these reasons, a significant benefit is you’re doing something productive that helps your customers in some way and gives meaning to your life? We do hope to make money, of course, but this is only one reason we take on the great responsibility of self-employment.

My own reason for being self-employed, after all the above reasons, most of which certainly apply to me, is to make more money than I need so I can help those around me. I know exactly what it’s like to have many troubles, and there were two or three people who helped me get through the bad time. I’m truly grateful to them for what they did, and I want to help someone else who could use monetary or other help. I need a little extra money to do this, so this is a compelling reason to continue what I’m doing as an entrepreneur and innovator. This is the real meaning in life—helping others.

Whatever you give to someone, if done willingly, without expecting anything in return, you will get back in some way many times over. It will give you a continuing reason to live. Follow the advice in the book Both Riches and Honor and who knows what good things will happen to you? In the book, Annie Rix Militz says:

Act wealthy. Talk prosperously. Be a free avenue through which riches may pass to all. The world needs to learn the spiritual science of wealth, and your home can be a classroom.

It is obvious celebrities and professionals will do anything for publicity. They want to build their personal brands however they can. Even bad behavior will do; Hollywood has excelled at this lately. Wouldn’t it be better to gain this recognition for some kind of good work, like raising money for a charity, or going to Katrina land to promote recovery operations, or even going to some foreign country to help people achieve better lives?

The Peace Corps offers many ways to give you a reason for living. When speaking of the Peace Corps, most people think of young people just out of college. Indeed, it began in 1960 when Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country by living and working in developing countries. Since then volunteers have been in at least 139 different countries around the world. The Corps has changed significantly, however. In keeping with the idea of giving meaning to life, it is now possible for Peace Corps service to be undertaken by those taking a sabbatical from work, retired individuals and couples, and those seeking a mid-career change. Maybe you would like this, especially if you’re close to being a Baby Boomer.

If you don’t want foreign travel, there is a U.S.-based service program called U.S.A Freedom Corps. This is really a group of programs providing local help for education, public safety, and the environment. It includes AmeriCorps, Citizen Corps, Learn & Serve America, and Senior Corps. Participants serve 10 to 12 months in a position. Together these groups offer unlimited opportunities for life-enhancing ways to help those less fortunate or who have special needs.

Successful athletes and other wealthy people often set up charitable foundations supporting various causes and non-profits. This is partly a tax decision, but most of them really seem to enjoy what they do. It’s a shame that many times some of this money gets siphoned away by greedy and unscrupulous people with great power. Really bad examples are the UN officials and Iraq oil money under Saddam and the recent Myanmar cyclone disaster where the rulers apparently used a large part of the gifts from other countries for their own gain. But then you have Bill Gates, who gave up leadership of Microsoft, which he started and nurtured into a dominant company in the Information Age, to oversee his family’s worldwide charities. He even got Warren Buffett to throw in his billions. The reason this is significant is Bill and Melinda Gates obviously have excellent management skills and so will be able to keep most such siphoning of funds from happening. All the major charities should have necessary controls in place to assure their money reaches the intended recipients.

These foundations, along with the hundreds of community foundations throughout the country that provide ways for “regular” people like you and me to create charitable endowment funds, are also a way for people to add meaning and purpose to their lives. Baby boomers everywhere are reaching the age where they turn from emphasis on making and accumulating wealth to trying to figure why they are here in the first place. What is their reason for living? Where is the meaning in the things they do?

One way you can give meaning to your life is to dedicate everything you do to someone: the janitor, traffic cop, your executive assistant, anyone you would like to honor. This is a kind of gift you can give to a deserving person. Many of us are not in a position to have a charitable foundation but would really like to help people. How can they do this with little or no money? This is one easy way with no cost at all to add meaning and a reason for living to your own life. Most of the time, the recipient of your gift will know nothing about it; but you know, and that’s what is important to this discussion. One of my role models was a very wealthy farmer who shared his wealth with many individuals and local charities. Most people who received his help never knew the source. I help a few people with a very little bit of money and I take extreme measures to remain anonymous. To my friend, and to me, an anonymous gift gives much more meaning and satisfaction. On his Website, Authentic Happiness, Dr. Martin E. P. Seligman describes his new program in Positive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. His research shows it is possible, with a positive attitude, to be happier, more satisfied, and have more meaning in your life. Visit this site for many ways you can use this new idea; about 700,000 people around the world are using the resources, all free, presented here by Dr. Seligman. A specific way to add meaning is through gratitude for good things that happen to you. Gratitude replaces unpleasant or negative thinking with positive ideas. Dr. Seligman describes a wonderful way to thank those who have helped you in the past but you have never adequately thanked them for what they did. He suggests writing a “gratitude” letter to your helpers in which you go into great detail what they did for you and how grateful you are. He advocates delivering and reading the letter to your benefactor in person Wow! How moving will that be to both of you? This action also has the possibility of becoming viral. That is, the recipients of your gratitude letter may write some letters of their own, their recipients could write similar letters, and there you go.

There are also many informal ideas that will help others and add meaning to your life; most of these you can develop yourself. Look around in your community or local area. There are many Hispanics now in the U.S., and a lot of them need to learn English as a speaking language. Ask around local churches, schools or libraries for volunteer opportunities if you have Spanish skills. There could be a need in some areas for other languages, as well.

Some other ideas might be preparing food as a volunteer for a church, PTA, or some other organization as a fundraiser. Or try helping out in some way at the local animal shelter. There are many other local organizations that help others with very limited funds; they depend on local volunteers—all these ideas can provide deep purpose for your life.

Our ageing population offers many opportunities for volunteer service. With life expectancy in the U.S. close to 80 years, there are increasing opportunities and many ways to help older people. Often they are left in situations where they need to visit doctors on a regular basis but have no way, or only inconvenient ways, to go where they need to be. The same is true for grocery shopping and other needs. And the current cost of gas may make trips of any kind impossible for those on fixed incomes with large medical expenses. It may be life-saving just to check with older people in your neighborhood, especially during periods of extreme heat or cold. This last activity costs nothing and it could mean everything to one of your older neighbors. If you are good with tools there are many ways to help those less fortunate than you are. There is always something broken that only takes a few minutes to fix; usually this won’t cost you anything, either. Just look around for a lot of ways to add depth and meaning to your life. Your personal spiritual reward is much greater than whatever effort may be required.

On a wider basis, Volunteer Match is a place where willing volunteers can find opportunities to serve among 58,832 member organizations, some of whom are in every community. They claim over 52,000 current opportunities, and say they have made over 3.5 million referrals. That’s a lot of opportunities and a lot of ways to find meaning in your life by volunteering for some great cause close to you. There is a least one opportunity that exists in almost any community. There is one that immediately turned up in my area which is located, really, in the middle of a swamp. The opportunity to volunteer is to host a foreign exchange student in your home. This is a chance to help an English speaking student from somewhere in the world further their education in America. These young people are insured and have their own spending money. Your job would be to give them a caring atmosphere where they can assimilate a new culture. What a great way to promote the American Way. This is only one of the opportunities available.

Better still is Volunteer Match’s list of virtual opportunities. These you can do from your home or computer, wherever you may be, even in your pajamas if you wish. It’s like the advantages of being a home-based innovator. An example is working for Katrina’s Angels writing press releases, folders, posters, and other media to promote the activities of the group. All this can be done without leaving home. At this time there are over 300 similar virtual opportunities listed.

Do Something lists more ways to become involved in helping others. Some of the causes are nothing some people would want to get into, but there are many others that you can choose that will be helpful to people across the world. Check it out and surely you can find one that is of interest to you.

Since the accumulation of wealth and achievement of goals by themselves don’t seem to provide the purpose and meaning people want in their lives, how can someone learn to be grateful? There are several things one can do to build gratitude for the many good things that happen to them. Meditation can be effective; it does require finding how to meditate which you can discover with an online search for this term. Then you need to practice on a daily basis—it’s harder to get into than it may seem. And there’s the 21-day “no complaint” idea. You may want to try this and you can find a lot more about it from Tim Ferris, author of The 4-Hour Workweek. But there is a much simpler way to become grateful—it is called “gratitude training” which you learn by daily exercises. As soon as you wake up, ask yourself, “What am I grateful for in my life?” Then write at least five things in your life you really appreciate. Make yourself do this for awhile, and soon it will become part of you. For more about gratitude see this page.

In the U.S. and all around the world, there is a revival of the quest for spiritual meaning and the purpose for our lives. Most of you are not yet at the age of baby boomers; they are your parents, but from just being around them and from observing all the weird things people young and old are doing, you realize the strong search for a reason to live. Begin to use some of the ideas we have discussed to make your life richer and more fulfilling. Don’t wait until retirement, as many have. It’s never too late to revive your spiritual needs, but if you begin early, your life will be a lot happier, your health will be better, and you will enjoy everything you do. There are a lot of clinically depressed people in our culture. If more people found deeper meaning for their lives at an earlier age, it would do away with a lot of these depressed people. Just try a few of these ideas that interest you; no one can do them all.

Serious Social Networks Marketing

This article is the result of several recent events that impacted my thinking. Sites like Facebook and MySpace have always existed outside my realm of interest. My view was they were just for teenagers and younger. That was true for awhile. Facebook was initiated by a Harvard sophomore originally for college students only; they were not teens to begin with, even though teens have become the primary users of programs like these.

Then I discovered that Senator Obama’s instant success was partly the result of getting the Facebook founder on his campaign to get his message out on the Internet. This resulted in millions of new voter registrations in the 18 to 29 years old age group, a demographic coveted by all marketers because of their desire to spend coupled with a high level of disposable income. Many in this age group have not really begun to worry about significant life problems like college for their children (they have just finished this) or their own retirement. In addition to new voters, this Internet savvy group has produced a continuing stream of small contributions totaling in the hundreds of millions of dollars! That’s unbelievable for a former nobody with Presidential aspirations.

A second event that got my attention was reading Career Distinction: Stand Out by Building Your Brand by William Arruda and Kirsten Dixson.

An interview with one of the authors, William Arruda, caught my eye in the August, 2007, issue of Entrepreneur. For years I realized many of my written articles were appearing whenever I Googled myself. Some think this is just an ego trip, but I was looking for ways to bring visitors to my Websites as extra traffic so maybe I could sell something. That interview about personal branding showed me a few things I could begin doing, one of which was to make my LinkedIn information public and up-to-date.

Your personal brand on the Internet is important. This could mean extra money for you because every employer you approach is going to Google you. The better you look, the more likely you are to get a job and good salary. The ideal situation for every job seeker is that instead of applying for jobs, employers find you. This is true also for people looking for prospective business associates. So, how do you position yourself to be the hunted rather than the hunter? Become known as an expert, which you can do with regular social network participation.

The last thing to persuade me of the importance of social networks was a recent article by Jim Louderback in PC Magazine. While researching the sites mentioned in the article, I discovered some network sites of a slightly different nature from the Facebooks. Keith Hampton, of the Annenberg School of Communication, University of Pennsylvania, discusses these different networks which he calls Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). ICTs are beginning to influence the way we work by allowing the transfer of office and manufacturing operations to the home or some virtual environment. We’ll first discuss briefly the new ICT networks and then go deeper into the traditional social networks like those in the PC article.

Two non-traditional ICTs are:

i-Neighbors is a way to communicate with your neighbors on a local basis. You have the opportunity to start a community on this site if one does not already exist, as in my case. Perhaps I can find time to start one; it could be an avenue to share expertise from the many retirees in the area, to locate health care services, or to market products and services on a local basis. This is all free, so it’s an economical way to do business and share ideas in your own community. This site has been mentioned in numerous articles in The New York Times, Time Magazine, The Financial Times, and many others. All the articles mention the ability of one of these organized communities to alert members of current crimes being committed, current events, and other helpful ideas.

eNeighbors is another ICT with many community features. If your neighborhood does not have one, you may be able to get one going. The cost is $82.99 billed annually, making it useful for homeowners’ associations, realtors’ groups, neighborhood watch groups, and others with fee services already in place to pay for the cost of eNeighbors. Among the things you can do with this service are uploading important documents for all to see, posting classified ads, taking care of administrative duties, and many other functions important to the community.

Now let’s return to traditional social networks. These have been thought of as programs used by teens, which is not so true anymore, because teens become young adults and continue their relationships with friends beyond their teenage years. But let’s look at how many users begin social networking. According to research by the Pew Foundation a social networking site is an online location where a user can create a profile and build a personal network that connects them to other users. The research also shows these facts about young users:

* 55% of all of online American youths ages 12-17 use an online social networking site.

* Older girls ages 15-17 are more likely to have used social networking sites and online profiles. 70% of older girls have used an online social network compared with 54% of older boys.

* 70% of older girls have created an online profile, while only 57% boys have done so.

* Teens say social networking sites help them manage their friendships (this is significant to realizing users who began network use as teenagers are likely to continue as they grow older—very significant to realizing the importance of using these sites to reach older groups).

* Household income for 56% of user teenagers is over $50,000.

* 84% of teens communicate by posting to a friend’s page on the network site.

* 85% of teens who use social networking sites say the profile they use or update most often is on MySpace.

Since MySpace is the most-used social network for teenagers who will later become young adults continuing to use the program, we will discuss MySpace first. This will be followed by some other traditional networks that seem to offer opportunities for possible marketing, personal branding, or other entrepreneurial opportunities.

The PC Magazine author refers to MySpace as being like the first college bar you frequented— sort of horrifying today. But the site is really for everyone including:

* Friends who want to talk Online.

* Single people who want to meet other Singles.

* Matchmakers who want to connect their friends with other friends.

* Families who want to keep in touch—map your Family Tree.

* Business people and co-workers interested in networking.

* Classmates and study partners.

* Anyone looking for long lost friends.

How Do I Use MySpace?

• First, Sign Up and Create a Profile
(Your Profile is Your Space on the Web, where you can describe yourself, hobbies and interests. You can even upload pictures and write journals).

• Second, Invite your Friends to join Your Personal Network.
OR, Search the site for your Friends who are already Members of Myspace.

• Third, View the Connections you create between Your Friends and Their Friends. Some people have thousands of people in their extended network! Meet your Friends’ Friends and Suggest Matches! You can communicate with anyone in your Personal Network.

Sign-up is easy, straightforward, and free. You must agree to terms of service and privacy policies. There are three special groups apparently representing large numbers of members. They are Band/Musician, Comedian, and Filmmaker.

MySpace is owned by News Corporation, the owner of the Fox network. All services are free to end users; revenue is the result of advertising based on information extracted from members and used to target the ads each member sees. In 2006, there were 106 million accounts with daily additions over 200,000.

The next network, LinkedIn, is great for furthering your career (or brand), but not as much fun. LinkedIn is an online network of more than 20 million experienced professionals from around the world, representing 150 industries. You can use it to:

* Find potential clients, service providers, subject experts, and partners who come recommended.

* Be found for business opportunities.

* Search for great jobs.

* Discover inside connections within a specific company or organization that can help you land jobs and close deals.

* Post and distribute job listings.

* Find high-quality passive candidates, people who aren’t actively pursuing any career or opportunity.

* Get introduced to other professionals through the people you know.

Basic membership is free.

Plaxo is a place to collect buckets full of business cards from your new best friends, many of whom you may be afraid to meet in the light of day. Membership includes 40 million people. They have introduced a new benefit called “Pulse.” This is a unique way for you to keep up with your other contacts wherever they are and whatever they are doing, no matter where in the world they are. Plaxo is sort of an online address book with reported 15 million users. It requires a very simple sign-up and it’s free.

Now, here is Orkut, a Google experiment, that has become very crowded—with Brazilians and Indians (both of which are up-and-coming business countries). As of May 2008, 43.9% of the traffic comes from Brazil, followed by India with 38.8%. Orkut can help you maintain existing relationships with pictures and messages and establish new ones by reaching out to people you've never met. Use it to find people who share your hobbies and interests, look for romantic connections, or establish new business contacts. You can also create and join a wide variety of online communities to discuss current events, reconnect with old school friends, and other interests. To join, just sign in with your Google Account. They have a corny slogan: “We hope to put you on the path to social bliss soon.”

Next is Pownce, which is supposed to be the place for super-cool Web 2.0 kids to hang out. Pownce originally came on the Internet by invitation only and instantly created great demand for these invitations. More recently, in January 2008, it has become available to the public by signing up on the Website. Click the “Join Pownce” button, then read and accept Terms of Service listed at the “Legal” link, bottom of any page. Sign up is simple and straight forward; some services require payment of a fee.

On Pownce you can share files, links, events, and messages. You can also have real conversations with other people. There is a download available making it possible to operate Pownce right from your desktop, without going to the Website.

Here is a network that is a little unusual. It is Twitter, where everyone gets on stage for a short while. The site allows unlimited 140 characters short messages. You can look up friends and acquaintances who belong to Twitter, or encourage your friends to join. Then see what they are doing from their posts. If you wish, you can begin to send your own short messages to them whenever it is convenient.

There is more information on the Twitter blog. Here I find that, as I write, Twitter is experiencing unusually slow service on their server which they are trying to fix. There is a lot more about Twitter included in extensive archives. Twitter has downloads, so you can use it right from your desktop. There are also a number of widgets for cell phones and even some specifically for your new iPhone. The service is very flexible, and joining Twitter is simple and very quick. You just have to be over 13 years old and accept their Terms of Service.

Many organizations (such as the Los Angeles Fire Department) have embraced the Twitter technology and put it to use in situations such as the October 2007 California wildfires.

Higher education is also using it to relay important information to students in a timelier manner, like The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Engineering. Several U.S. presidential campaigns use Twitter as a publicity mechanism, including those of Ron Paul, John Edwards, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton. Media outlets such as CNN have also started using Twitter to break news.

Twitter continues to suffer from a reputation for repeated outages.
Finally we get to the main reason for Barack Obama’s campaign successes, Facebook. All that's needed to join Facebook is a valid email address. To connect with coworkers or classmates, use your school or work email address to register. Once you register, join a regional network to connect with the people in your area.

Facebook is made up of many networks, each

based around a company, region, or school. Join the networks that reflect your real-life communities to learn more about the people who work, live, or study around you.

Facebook's Platform enables anyone, anywhere, to build complete applications that you can choose to use. The possibilities are endless.

Define your experience on Facebook by choosing applications that are useful and relevant to your world.

* Facebook gives you four ways to connect with other people:

* Find people you e-mail.

* Search for people.

* Find people you Instant Message.

* Browse by Name.

The Website is free to users, but generates revenue from advertising

Consider what we have discussed that you can do with social networks:

* Teens, who have been using these networks from perhaps as young as 10 or younger, are not going to stop communicating with their friends just because they are over 17.

* Building a network of friends and their friends will open opportunities for marketing, new business ideas, a new job, and knowledgeable people who will be able to help you with your own problems.

* Build your own personal brand by participating in as many networks as you have time to do.

* Expand your professional reputation with consistent participation.

* Portray your best qualities so you make a favorable impression on prospective employers or business associates. You are going to be searched by everyone involved in such a meeting.

* Use your creative abilities to find other network uses.

Just as you are limited by time and distance restraints to the number of real friends you can have in reality (I believe three or four truly best friends is the limit) so you can actively participate in a limited number of social networks. My thoughts on those you should try if you have time to be active are:

* Facebook has shown its obvious credibility in the present Presidential primary political campaigns.

* MySpace is important because so many teens use it and will continue their use long after their teen years.

* LinkedIn is effective for career and personal branding purposes.

* Try Pownce because it seems to have a kind of snob appeal, perhaps because it was originally so exclusive.

* Twitter is used by so many local emergency organizations that it must be useful to get a message out, including marketing and other entrepreneurial uses.

All Internet sites are subject to instant termination because of financial problems, death of the Website operator, or any of a host of other reasons. The point is, don’t depend on any one of these sites to be around forever; it probably won’t be. Use as many outlets as you can.

Facebook Business Solutions: Using Facebook Pages

There was a time – not so very long ago – when the use of Facebook, or similar social networking sites, was for personal use only. Any attempt to promote a product or service in the forums or posting areas was considered taboo and resulted in flaming or ostracizing or sometimes even termination of membership.

In an earlier article, we discussed the incredible ability that Facebook has to offer advertisers extremely targeted audiences based on the profiles that users create themselves. This is an advantage for the Facebook users too, because the ads that appear on their Facebook will be more interesting and useful to them than if the ads were simply random.

As private users with businesses began to see the power of Facebook networking to boost their business, there was pressure on Facebook to create appropriate ways to do this without infringing on the individual community that was the main attraction of Facebook from the beginning. One result is “Facebook Pages.” Here’s what Facebook itself has to say about why they created Facebook Pages:

Facebook created Pages when we noticed that people were trying to connect with brands and famous artists in ways that didn't quite work on Facebook. We created Pages to offer you a way to accurately represent on Facebook what’s important to you in real life. Facebook Pages help you discover new artists, businesses, and brands as well as connect with those you already love. Here are the simple steps:

1. Go to the sign-up page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php

2. Choose an appropriate category is for your business. This can’t be changed later (if you want to change it, you have to delete that page and start another one), so take the time to choose wisely. Play with the drop-down lists to see the variety of options. Note that you can make a Facebook Page for a single product and there is no limit to the number of Facebook pages you can set up.

3. Type in your business or product or brand name and click "Create Page."

4. Enter a short description of your business and a Website URL in the "Add Information To This Page" area. If possible, upload your logo as a photo/image.

5. Click on the hyperlink for your business name in the top left corner and click "publish this page." This step is necessary so that others can see your business profile.

Blogger Dharmesh Shah recommends one more very important step: from your new profile page, click "Add to my products" so that you become the first "fan" of your own business. From this, your other “friends” on Facebook will see something on their site like “Sally Smith is a fan of your business name.” If any of your friends decide to become a friend to your business, then THEIR friends will see a similar message and the “good virus” begins to spread the word about your business, name or brand.

One especially powerful function of Facebook Pages is the ability of the Page Administrator (that’s usually YOU) to monetize the Page on Facebook. This can be done through applications (including third party applications), but if you already have the ability to carry out sales transactions on your own Website, simply use a link to send Facebook Page visitors to your sales site.

Facebook suggests that you can leverage the effectiveness and viral distribution of your Facebook Page by adding Facebook Social Ads. “Create an ad creative and attach it to stories in News Feed or in the left-hand Ad Space. Social Ads increase the number of friends who will see the story when they visit Facebook, and you can also target the ads to specific demographics.” For more about this, visit this page.

The Razors Edge Difference

Vince Lombardi, former football coach of the Green Bay Packers football team, described the Razor's Edge concept in football very well when he said, "most games are won or lost in the last two minutes of the first and second half." But what Lombardi is best remembered for - with respect to football's Razor's Edge - is the "Second Effort" concept, which he introduced for the edification of his players. In a nutshell, the "Second Effort" concept simply meant, that when a player was initially stopped by the opposing team, he would always surge forward a second time, with the added thrust of a "Second Effort."

Now, just consider the tremendous difference you could create in your own life if you were to adopt a similar mental attitude. For example, if you are a person who is working in sales and currently selling only three units a week, what would the consequences be for you if you were to decide to make one additional sale per week, through a conscientious application of the second effort concept. Well, on a weekly basis, it might not appear to be a major breakthrough. However, viewed over the time frame of an entire career, it would actually amount to well over two thousand extra sales. Learning To Success

Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as an educated person. You are either learning or you are not. In today's world, it is vitally important that you see the truth in Eric Hoffer's statement. The win or loss, which is waiting in the wings for every person, is enormous. You get to choose which you will experience.
Examine what Mr. Hoffer said. There are two obvious parts to his statement. The first part is very clear; how well it is understood is another subject.

"The learners will inherit the earth."

That's pretty straightforward. I want to come back and elaborate on that statement because it is exciting, full of promise and possibility. However it would probably be wise to look at the second part of his advice first. Then, if you happen to fall into the category Eric Hoffer referred to, you can change your situation and win.

"The learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists."

In virtually every country of the world you can find individuals, thousands of them, walking the streets with degrees in their hands...degrees from prestigious universities. They cannot find work. Why? These individuals view the conditions and circumstances that surround them as very frightening. They are the people who Eric Hoffer referred to who "are beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists."

Look around, the world is definitely changing, and it will never be the same again. Power is slipping away, disappearing from some circles, and reappearing in others. Countries, companies and individuals who have held the power in the past are quickly losing it, if in fact, they have not already watched it melt in their hands. Their often smug, sometimes selfish, domineering, complacent attitude has cost them dearly. They are confused and this confusion is frequently fueled by their own ignorance. When that happens it ultimately leads to anger or resentment - sometimes both. This negative energy is then quite frequently misdirected, possibly at their loved ones, which then causes an entirely new set of problems.

These people are clutched by an unseen enemy and their frustration is endless because they are not sure what has happened or what is happening. Their world seems to be turning upside down.

The entire world is in the midst of a paradigm shift, which is unprecedented. There have been transitions in the past but nothing to equal what we are presently experiencing. The world is moving from an intellectual to a spiritual vibration. The rules for winning have changed dramatically and the majority of the populations are still living with the old rules. There are an enormous number of people in every community who have worked hard and disciplined themselves to follow the only rules they know...still they are losing. They are bewildered, confused and in many cases, angry and most feel their anger is justified, whether it is or not matters little. They are doing what they were taught by their parents, teachers, and employers. Unfortunately they too, were working with the old rules.

In the past, individuals were recognized and rewarded for what they knew. Corporations waited on the sidelines dangling monetary rewards attempting to attract the graduates from the big name universities of the world. There were the multi-million dollar MBA management development programs that corporations placed their hope in for years. Most everyone was conditioned to deify the intellect. Individuals were not properly recognized and rewarded for what they did.

Rather than focusing on what is or was wrong, we should let it go. Let the dead bury the dead. The world I grew up in is gone, forever. The world has changed. We live in the new era. This is a spiritual world governed by exact laws. Everyone who studies these laws and incorporates them into every aspect of their life will be richly rewarded. I believe we would be wise to go back to the promise Eric Hoffer shared, "In times of change, the learners inherit the earth."

The learners are continually preparing themselves to adapt to the changes. Rather than reacting they are responding to these changes and they are responding in an appropriate manner. The learners are excited with the prospects of what this paradigm shift is bringing.

Selling is one of the toughest jobs in the world. There are no buffers between you and the reality of daily difficulties, delays and disappointments. You often ride an emotional roller-coaster, up and down, that never seems to stop. You are all alone.

You Must Motivate Yourself

Like a front line soldier, you must get yourself up every day and go out to where the bullets of rejection fly. You must continually deal with the possibility that all your sales efforts could turn out to be in vain through no fault of your own. And you must keep on going in spite of this because your profession of selling requires it.

Face the Facts of Selling

Selling is hard. It always has and it always will be. Even for the best and most experienced salespeople, it is a continual effort. You can make it easier by developing your skills in the critical areas of prospecting, presenting and closing sales, but you can never make selling an easy profession. However, once you accept that selling is a hard way to make a living, it somehow becomes a little easier. Selling is also a wonderful profession. It offers opportunities for the average person that are unimaginable in most countries. Make a Wonderful Living

As a salesperson, the reason that you can make a wonderful living for yourself and your family, achieve your goals and fulfill all of your aspirations, is because making the sale is difficult, and often, extremely difficult. And the longer the sales cycle, or the larger the dollar amount involved, the more that companies have to pay salespeople to do the work. When you are selling complicated or expensive products in a highly competitive market, and you do it well, you can become one of the highest paid people in your field, if not the world.

Be the Best at What You Do

You should get up every morning and give a silent prayer of thanks that selling is so difficult. If it was easy, the field would be flooded by amateurs and the amount you could earn would be greatly reduced. But because it is hellishly hard, by becoming very good at it, your future can be unlimited!

Choosing the positive path can be easy at some times in our life and more difficult at other times. Be Clear About Your Goals

There are many simi larities between business and war. In both cases, the victor is the one who uses superior strategy against his or her competition.

There are three principles of military strategy you can apply to your work every single day. The first idea from the military is called the Principle of Man euver. The principle of man euver says that you should be clear about the goal, but be flexible about the process of ach ieving it. According to the Menninger Institute, this quality of flexibility is the most important single quality that you will require for success in times of rap id change.

Be Open to Continuous Feedback

A key peak performance quality for you is to "accept feedback and self-correct." Peak performers are those who can take information from their environment and even if the information is contrary to all of their planning, they can accept the information, modify their plans, and continue moving forward. They are always open to new ideas and insights.

Learn What You Need to Know

The second military principle you can use is the Principle of Intelligence. This principle of intelligence means simply, "get the facts!"

The most important thing in business decision making is for you to get accurate information. Facts don't lie. It is important that you get the real facts, not the assumed facts or the apparent facts or the obvious facts, or the hoped for facts, but the real, provable facts.

Make Better Decisions

Perhaps the key job of the executive is decision making. The quality of the decisions that you make will be in direct proportion to the amount of time that you take to gather timely and accurate information. The third military principle applied to strategic planning is the Principle of Economy of Force. Economy of force means that you expend only the resources necessary to achieve the objective and not more. Why People Succeed or Fail

Parkinson's Law is one of the best known and the most important laws of money and wealth accumulation. It was developed by English writer C. Northcote Parkinson many years ago and it explains why most people retire poor.

The Way the Law Works

This law says that, no matter how much money people earn, they tend to spend the entire amount and a little bit more besides. Their expenses rise in lockstep with their earnings. Many people are earning today several times what they were earning at their first jobs. But somehow, they seem to need every single penny to maintain their current lifestyles. No matter how much they make, there never seems to be enough.

The Key to Financial Success

The first corollary of Parkinson's Law says: "Financial independence comes from violating Parkinson's Law."

Parkinson's Law explains the trap that most people fall into. This is the reason for debt, money worries and financial frustration. It is only when you develop sufficient willpower to resist the powerful urge to spend everything you make that you begin to accumulate money and move ahead of the crowd.

Slow Down Your Spending

The second corollary of Parkinson's Law is: "If you allow your expenses to increase at a slower rate than your earnings, and you save or invest the difference, you will become financially independent in your working lifetime."

This is the key. I call it the "wedge." If you can drive a wedge between your increasing earnings and the increasing costs of your lifestyle, and then save and invest the difference, you can continue to improve your lifestyle as you make more money. By consciously violating Parkinson's Law, you will eventually become financially independent.

Action Exercises

Here are two things you can do to apply this law immediately:

First, imagine that your financial life is like a failing company that you have taken over. Institute an immediate financial freeze. Halt all non-essential expenses. Draw up a budget of your fixed, unavoidable costs per month and resolve to limit your expenditures temporarily to these amounts.

Carefully examine every expense. Question it as though you were analyzing someone else's expenses. Look for ways to economize or cut back. Aim for a minimum of a 10 percent reduction in your living costs over the next three months.

Second, resolve to save and invest 50 percent of any increase you receive in your earnings from any source. Learn to live on the rest. This still leaves you the other 50 percent to do with as you desire. Do this for the rest of your career.

Be A Negative Optimist

The most important quality for success in entrepreneurship and in life is the quality of optimism. Optimists have an unrealistic expectation of success. As a result, they are willing to try far more things without becoming discouraged. In addition, because of their unrealistically positive attitude, they are willing to persist much longer than the average person. Optimism is a wonderful quality as long as you have it under control.

Temper Your Optimism

In order to be successful in business, and in any activity where your money is involved, you must temper your optimism with negativism. You must be enthusiastic about the possible upside of the investment but you must be skeptical, critical, suspicious and demanding about all the different ways that your money can be lost.

Listen to Negative Viewpoints

Seek out and listen carefully to people who are negative toward your idea. Look for negative thinkers, because their viewpoints can be invaluable and save you a fortune in time and money. I have a friend who is a lawyer. And he recommends and gives advice to many people on investments. And what he does is this. When someone comes and they want to make an investment that he's unsure about, he says, all right, I want you to come to my office and I want you to sit behind my desk. And then I'm going to come in and I'm going to present this investment to you and I want you to critique this investment as if you were me.

Help Others to Evaluate Honestly

And he says that when his clients begin critiquing the investments they're thinking about going into, when they begin becoming negative thinkers about the investments, he says they are astonished at how bad the investments really are. He said he has saved his clients millions of dollars by forcing them to be negative thinkers about their own ideas, simply by switching roles and sitting in front of the desk while they sit behind the desk.

Keep Your Mind Open

But don't be overly influenced by negative thinkers. Just take their viewpoints into consideration. There's a famous story of Mary Hudson, who started off with 200 dollars in the middle of the Depression and leased a gas station that two men had gone broke running at two different occasions. And from that she built a company called Hudson Oil, which is now the biggest independent distributor of gas and oil in the United States. From a 200 dollar investment, even though everybody told her she would fail. So remember, listen to negative thinkers, but don't necessarily accept their advice.

Action Exercises

Here are two things you can do immediately to get these ideas into action.

First, view your idea as if you were an outside consultant. Ask, "What are all of the possible risks or flaws in this cause of action?"

Second, seek out the opinions of others. Listen without responding or defending. Thank them for their input. They may save you a lot of money.

Your Earning Ability

You may not even be aware that, unless you are wealthy already, your ability to work is the most valuable asset that you have. By utilizing your earning ability to its fullest, you can bring thousands of dollars each year into your life. By applying your earning ability to the production of valuable goods and services, you can generate sufficient money to pay for all the things that you want in life. The amount of money that you are paid today is a direct measure of the extent to which you have developed your earning ability so far.

Use Your Time Well

The first corollary of the Law of Capital says: "Your most precious resource is your time." Your time is really all you have to sell. How much time you put in and how much of yourself you put into that time, largely determines your earning ability. Poor time management is one of the major reasons for poor productivity and underachievement in every industry in America. It is the number one problem for both managers and salespeople in every field.

Invest Yourself Carefully

The second corollary of the Law of Capital says: "Time and money can be either spent or invested." One of the smartest things that you can do is to invest three percent of your earnings every month back into yourself on personal and professional development, on becoming better at the most important things you do. In fact, if you just invested as much in your mind each year as you do in your car, that alone could make you wealthy.

Invest one hour of your time reading in your field every day. Listen to audio programs in your car. Attend every course that can advance you in your career. Get personal and professional coaching to help you to get the very best out of yourself.

Get Better At the Things You Do

There is nothing that will give you a bigger and better "bang" for your buck than reinvesting a part of your time and money back into your capability to earn even more. Increase Your Return on Life

The third corollary of the Law of Capital says: "One of the best investments of your time and money is to increase your earning ability."

The purpose of corporate strategic planning is to increase "return on equity" or ROE. This requires organizing and reorganizing corporate activities so that the company is earning a higher return on the capital invested in the organization. In your work life, your personal equity is your mental and emotional capital. Your job then is to earn the highest possible return on your human capital, to increase your "return on energy." This way of viewing yourself must become a key part of your attitude throughout your work life.

Action Exercises

Here are two things you can do to apply this law immediately:

First, take a list of your output responsibilities, the things you do that represent accomplishments, not activities. Examine the list and rank the tasks by priority, on the basis of the value of the work to your company.

Second, take a list of all the things you do, day in and day out. Take this list to your boss and ask him or her to rank your tasks in terms of how valuable he or she considers them to be. Then resolve to work on your most valuable tasks every minute of every day.

In golf, there is a saying that, "You drive for show, but you putt for dough." In selling, you prospect and present for show, but you overcome customer skepticism and gain commitment for dough. Your ability to answer objections and get the sale is the true test of how good you really are as a salesperson.

The True Test of Selling

This is perhaps the most stressful and challenging part of the sales process. It's where the rubber meets the road. It is your ability to answer the questions that the prospect puts to you and overcome his natural reluctance to make a commitment that wraps up the sales process. It is also the part of the sales process that salespeople dislike the most and which customers find the most stressful.

Plan It in Advance

The end game of selling must be carefully thought through and planned in advance so that you are thoroughly prepared to bring the sales conversation to its natural conclusion at the earliest and most appropriate moment. Fortunately, this is a skill, like riding a bicycle or typing with a typewriter, and you can learn it through study and practice.

Handling Objections Comes First

Handling objections and closing the sale are two different parts of the sales process but they are so close together that this chapter will discuss them as a single function. Just as there are reasons why people buy a product, there are reasons why they don't. Often answering an objection or removing an obstacle is the critical element in making the sale. You can answer the objection and close the sale simultaneously.

Make It a Reason to Buy

Objections can be turned into reasons for buying. Just as there is a primary reason for buying a product, a hot button, there is a primary objection that stops the person from buying it. If you can emphasize the one and remove the other, the sale falls together naturally.

Smaller Products Versus Larger Products

In selling smaller products or services, where you can prospect and make a complete presentation in the first meeting, your approach to closing will be different from that required if you are selling a larger product in a multi-call sale that stretches over several weeks or months.

Ask For the Order

In the shorter, smaller sale, the prospect knows everything necessary to make a buying decision at the end of your presentation. Your aim should be to answer any lingering questions and then ask for the order. In the larger sale, you may have to meet with the prospect several times before the prospect is in a position to make a buying decision. You will have to be more patient and persistent.

Here are two things you can do immediately to put these ideas into action.

First, prepare yourself in advance for the endgame of selling by anticipating anything the customer might offer as a reason for not buying. Be ready.

Second, look for the hot button, the reason the customer will buy, and press it. Meanwhile, find out his major reason for not buying and remove it.

Listening Builds Self-Esteem

It has been said that, "Rapt attention is the highest form of flattery." When you listen intently to another person and it is clear that you genuinely care about what that other person is saying, his or her self-esteem goes up. His or her feeling of personal value increases. He or she feels more worthwhile and important as a human being. You can actually make another person feel terrific about himself or herself by listening in a warm, genuine, caring way to everything he or she has to say.

When a man and a woman go out for the first time, they spend an inordinate amount of time talking and listening to each other. They look into each other's eyes and hang on every word. They are each fascinated by the personality of the other. The more each listens to the other, the more positive and happy each of them feel and the stronger becomes the bonds of affection between them.

The Opposite of Listening is Ignoring

You always listen to that which you most value. You always ignore that which you devalue. The fastest way to turn a person off, to hurt their feelings and make them feel slighted and angry is to simply ignore what they are saying or interrupt them in the middle of a thought. Ignoring or interrupting is the equivalent of an emotional slap in the face. Men especially have to be careful about their natural desire to make a remark or an observation in the middle of a conversation. This can often cause the sales conversation to come to a grinding halt.

Action Exercises

Now, here are two things you can do immediately to put these ideas into action.

First, take every opportunity to make the other person feel important by listening attentively to what he or she says.

Second, avoid interrupting the other person by slowing down and pausing for a few moments after he or she has stopped speaking.

Finding A New Business Idea

Look for Opportunities

How do you find a new product or service, recognizing that 80 percent or more will be new in five years? Here's a series of ideas. Number one, begin with yourself. Begin with your own talents, your abilities, your experience, knowledge, interest, background, education, and so on. Look carefully at your current work, your current business, your current position, or your current product or service. Seek for what is called your own acres of diamonds. Look under your own feet.

Look Into Yourself

Here's a question. What qualities account for your greatest successes in life so far? What personal qualities and abilities have gotten you to where you are? And how could you apply those qualities and abilities to starting and building a new business?

If you already have a company, ask what are your companies' talents, abilities, experience, knowledge, interest, background, and so on. What qualities and talents and abilities have enabled your company to succeed up to now? Where can you specialize? Where can you make a difference?

Identify What You Really Enjoy

Number two is look for a product or service about which you can really become enthusiastic. Sometimes people become wealthy by translating or transforming their hobbies into a business. You will be most successful doing something or marketing something that you really love.

Every product must have a champion. Every product or service must have someone in the business who really, really loves the product or service and is eager to get out and tell other people about it.

Improve On Something Else

Number three, look for something that is an improvement on an existing product or service, not something brand new. Look for something that's cheaper or better quality. Or that has additional features or functions. Look for something that's an improvement.

Remember improving an existing successful product or service is the fastest and surest way to build a successful business. An idea only needs to be ten percent new and better to capture substantial market share. Brand new products or services are very risky.

Be Willing to Work Hard

The fourth key to finding a new product or service is this. Don't look for easy money. Don't look for gimmicks or useless knickknacks. Don't look for get-rich-quick schemes or rewards without working, because they're aren't any.

More people have wasted more time and more life and more money trying to find quick ways to make easy money than you can possibly imagine. So be willing to put in a lot of hard work before you start making real money in a business.

Success Takes Time

It takes two years to break even in the average business. It takes four years to show a profit. It takes maybe eight to ten years before it starts to generate real cash flow. So you have to be patient. If you're impatient, what will happen is you'll end up setting yourself further back than you can imagine.

Long ago in a small, far away village, there was a place known as the House of 1000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he bounced happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself staring at 1000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his. He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1000 great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the house, he thought to himself, "This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit it often."

In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw the 1000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him, he growled at them and was horrified to see 1000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself, "That is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again."

Steve Jobs & Apple Success Story

Love and Loss

I was lucky. I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation - the Macintosh - a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started?

Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me - I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT.

I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple.It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking.

Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.

Having A Vision

Whether you liked his politics or not, much can be learned from the life of former President Clinton. Grolier's "New Book of Knowledge" reports that as a teenager "Clinton thought of becoming a doctor or a reporter or even a musician. But after a fateful meeting with President John F. Kennedy, while still in high school, he made up his mind to enter politics." At that moment a vision was born that he would hold onto - that he would glorify in his mind over and over - for the next 30 years, until he himself was elected President at the age of 46.

Jay Leno, who succeeded the venerable Johnny Carson as host of "The Tonight Show," first envisioned that he would be the host when he was just 22-years-old and unknown and unproven as a comedian, much less as host of a show of such regard. For twenty years he enthroned in his heart an ideal that most people would have thought was "foolish, outlandish and impossible."

The ancient writer tells us in Proverbs that "Without a vision, the people perish." And Thoreau told us that "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation." No doubt because the masses are without a vision for their lives.

What is your vision for your future, your ideal life? Is it written down? Do you review it and think about it often? Have you "enthroned" it in your heart? Is your life organized around goals and objectives that will ensure your vision is reached?

Wallace D. Wattles, wrote "There is no labor from which most people shrink as they do from that of sustained and consecutive thought; it is the hardest work in the world." And yet it is the "sustained and consecutive thought" about our vision that is the first and primary labor of achievement.

Thoreau also wrote one of my favorite passages of all time. And it gives us the best reason there is to stop what you're doing today and identify the vision for your life. "If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours."

And that's worth thinking about!

Circumstances & Dreams

The greatest stumbling block to achieving anything of importance in your life is circumstances. We let circumstances get us off the hook when we should be giving it everything we've got. More dreams are shattered and goals lost because of circumstances than any other single factor.

How often have you caught yourself saying, "I would like to do or have this but I can't because...?" Whatever follows "because" is the circumstance.

Successful people use circumstances to catapult them on toward their goal, while the masses use them as road blocks. A circumstance may cause a detour in your life but you should never permit it to stop you.

George Bernard Shaw is quoted as saying, "People are always blaming circumstance for what they are. I do not believe in circumstance. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstance they want and if they can't find them they make them."

Napoleon said, "Circumstances hell, I make them."

The next time you hear someone say they would like to vacation in Paris, or purchase a particular automobile but they can't because they have no money. Tell them they don't need any money, your reward will probably be a blank stare followed with, "What do you mean I don't need any money?"

Explain they don't need the money until they make a decision to go to Paris or purchase the car. When the decision is made, they will figure out a way to get the amount needed. They always do.

The circumstance they are using is one of the most common: a lack of money. The real cause of their problem is lack of decision. You always attract what you need when you decide it must be done. Try this yourself today. You know the task you have been putting off "because..." Make a decision, forget the circumstance or adopt Shaw's theory, but get it done!

The Creative Department

I have often wondered why most companies have a creative department with a limited number of people, usually a very small percentage of the people which are on the payroll.

Every department in a company is a creative department as long as the department has people in it. All people are creative. Creativity has its root in the creator which is within each of us. As you permit the higher side of your nature to express itself in a greater way for good in your life, you are being creative.

There are an enormous number of people who deprive themselves of many of the joys life offers because they believe they are not creative.

"Musicians are creative, writers, artists and designers are creative but I'm not."

You should realize there are creative auto-mechanics, carpenters, secretaries and warehouse people. There are lawyers, accountants and dentists who are creative.

Creativity has absolutely nothing to do with what you do but it has everything to do with how you do it. William James said, "Creativity is the ability to think in unhabitual ways."

Pay particular attention today to the various people you come in contact with. Observe closely how these people apply themselves to their jobs.

Some will be an absolute symphony in every move they make. It will be obvious they have given creative thought to their work while others move in a very mechanical way. If they are asked to do anything which may be out of the norm you may very well hear the reply, "I'm sorry, that is not my job." There are definite self-imposed limitations to their activity.

They have never learned that they are a truly dynamic being with limitless creative potential in every fiber of their being. Nor have they learned that this creative potential is awaiting recognition from them.

You have the opportunity to express your creativity staring you in the face every minute. If you haven't begun to express it, do so today.

Believe and Succeed

You will agree, I am sure, that all thinking people have a sincere desire to succeed.

You want to win; I want to win. No one sets out to deliberately destroy themselves - although I must admit, at times it certainly appears as if some people do.

If everyone wants to win - why don't they? There are probably many answers to that question. After talking with hundreds of people who do not seem to be able to make it happen, I have come to the conclusion that the answer to success is locked up in a seven letter word - "Believe."

Losers do not believe they can win. Why don't they believe? I think there is an answer to that question and I'll get to it in a moment. If you are having difficulty making something big happen in your life, listen closely.

All the great religious leaders, philosophers and self-help gurus have told us to believe and succeed. "All things are possible for those who believe."

William James said, "Believe and your belief will create the fact."

I have found that our belief system is based on our evaluation of something. Frequently when we re-evaluate a situation our belief about that situation will change.

Half of my life was wasted. I never even tried to accomplish anything of any importance because I did not believe in myself. The truth was I knew very little about me. Many years ago I was encouraged to begin studying myself, re-evaluate myself. I began to gain an understanding of my marvelous mind. Everyday I learned a little more and I suddenly began to believe in myself.

Today I have a number of companies around the world earning millions of dollars. We have a very successful year long coaching program. We teach people the laws of their mind. Long before the year's program is over we see marvelous things happen from more money to great loving relationships.

Re-evaluate yourself. There is a sleeping giant in you. Release it.

Mental Prisons

Habits play an important role in your life. Like many aspects of your life, habits can be considered both a blessing and a curse. Robert Russell in his magnificent little book "You Try It" wrote that habit was God's way of making good automatic in your life.

Dr. Jay Dishman, who wrote an excellent article about habit in his monthly newsletter dated February 1985. Dr. Dishman's article has helped thousands of people around the world. Today I want to share it with you. Here goes!

"Recently I visited Alcatraz Prison. Once it housed the most hardened of criminals. Today it is open to tourists under the direction of the United States Parks Department. Many men have tried to escape Alcatraz; no one is known to have succeeded. As I listened to the tour guide explain the impossibility of escape, I thought of other prisons equally confining but where the doors are never locked, no guards walk the halls, and escape is encouraged and possible. That prison is Habit."

Our habit is thinking about ourselves and our environment as a jail or a paradise. We need but to look around us to see people who are rich emotionally and materially because they think and feel rich. We also see people who are laden with emotional and material debt because they think lack. Some are inspired with vision, others are encumbered with doubt. Some are moved by ambition, others feel safer in monotony. Some reach for the mountain tops, others huddle in the pits. Some seek opportunity, others wait for it to knock. The sad fact is that more people are confined by their thoughts than are fed by them.

Negative thinking shuts us in a prison, but there is a way out. The apostle Paul said, "Be transformed by the renewal of your mind." Paul knew a lot about prisons, both physical and mental. You renew your life by renewing your mind. You renew your mind when you change your habit of thinking. Dr. Jay Dishman helped thousands change their habit of thinking in his lifetime. Four Ways to Test Your Idea

How to be sure that you have a great business idea before you put time and money into it.

There are four great ways for you to test any product or service idea before you start a business built upon it.

The Best Source of Advice

Number one, seek out people who are already in the same business and ask their opinions of the product or service. Many people have saved themselves an enormous amount of time and money by finding that people who are already in the business wish they weren't in the business and who wish they hadn't invested the time or money to get in the business in the first place. So go and talk to them. Ask them what they think about the business. Ask them if they would recommend that someone else get into the business. Don't be shy or secretive.

Ask for Feedback On Your Idea

Every so often, at seminars, I have people come up to me and ask me if I would give them some advice on their business, and I say, "Well, what is your idea?" And they won't tell me what their idea is because they're afraid somebody will steal their idea. The fact is that ideas are a dime a dozen. So be perfectly open. Tell people what you're thinking of doing. And get feedback from people who are already in the business. That alone has saved me hundreds of thousands of dollars. It may even have saved my financial life on a couple of occasions.

Ask Your Bank Manager for Advice

Number two is to ask your bank manager for his opinion or advice. A bank manager, who deals with commercial accounts, very often has a tremendously accurate sense for what kind of businesses will succeed and what kind won't. One 5-minute interview with my bank manager a few years ago saved me $200,000 dollars in an investment. He pointed out to me the weaknesses in the particular business I was looking at getting into, and I had no answer for him. So I didn't go into the business and the people who did lost everything that they put into it. Ask your bank manager. Your bank manager can be one of the very best sources of business advice.

Check With Family and Friends

Number three, ask your friends, ask your family, ask your acquaintances for information. Family members are very good targets for market research. Ask your family and friends if they would buy the product or service that you're thinking of offering. How much would they pay for it? Listen to their questions. Listen to their criticisms. Listen to their concerns. Because if you can't answer their questions and concerns in a logical and believable way, it could be that there's something wrong with your idea.

Talk to a Potential Customer

The fourth way to do market research is to visit prospective customers for the product or service and ask if they would buy it. If you're thinking of selling something to a company, go to the type of company that you would sell it to and ask if they would buy it if you produced it. If you're thinking of selling something through retail, go to the retailer and ask them if they would buy it or sell it. Ask the customer. Customers are very open and very candid and sometimes they'll give you insights that will be worth their weight in gold. If you're going to sell through a retailer, ask the retailer if he or she could sell the product if they were carrying it. Why or why not?

Action Exercises

Now, here are two things you can do immediately to test your ideas more thoroughly before you invest in them:

First, visit people who are in the same business and ask for their opinions. Call them on the telephone. A person already doing the business is the best source of advice in that business.

Second, ask your bank manager for advice. Lay out your business plan or idea to him or her and ask for his or her candid feedback. This could save you an enormous amount of time and money.

Four Ways to Get Your Opt In Subscribers to Trust You Quickly

While the rest of the world has developed many barriers and protections to keep their e-mail accounts spam-free, there are also those who sign up to receive mails that promote your (and other’s) products, services and site. This is mainly because these subscribers want to know more about what these sites are offering and how they can be beneficial for them. They expect to be kept posted on what they are interested in and what is new in the market or field they have chosen.

Businesses are so lucky when they can get these kinds of customers; the basic element needed to get them (and keep them) is trust. When your customers trust you, they will reward you with their loyalty. Many internet users have gone to great lengths in protecting their e-mail accounts from spam mail. Some free-mail providers and internet service providers offer spam protection, while there are also some internet-based companies that screen your mails for you.

With an opt-in mail list, the mails you send containing your promotional materials such as newsletters, catalogs and marketing media will go through without being filtered out by the receiver’s spam filter or their ISP’s spam filter. Your intended recipient will be able to read and view what you have sent, making it a successful transfer of information. To be allowed to do so, you will need permission from your recipient; to get this permission, you need to win their trust. With the great lack of disregard for privacy in the internet, getting the trust of an internet user you don’t personally know is a big achievement.

So, to build a good opt-in list, you need people to trust you, and for a faster and quicker build up, you need to get them to trust you quickly. The faster you build your opt-in list, the faster word about your site and company gets to be spread. The bigger the scope of your opt-in list, the more traffic you get; this spells more profits. It’s easy math if you think about it. Getting the numbers is not that simple though, or is it? Here are some key considerations:

Getting the trust of your clientele shouldn’t be so hard especially if you do have a legitimate business. Getting your customers’ trust should be based upon your expertise. People rely on other people who know what they are talking about. Garner all the knowledge and information you can about your business and its products and services. Frankly if you decide to go into a business, you’d better have an interest in it. How many basketball payers become coaches? You don’t usually venture into something in which you don’t have any interest.

Show your clients that you are knowledgeable. Give them helpful hints and guidelines that pertain to what you are selling. If you’re into hardware products, talk about how to install a roof. If you’re a settlement lawyer, provide articles on insurance settlements. You don’t have to be a big corporation to use an opt-in list. If your customers see you as someone who knows what he is doing and saying, they will trust you quickly. We’ve all had the experience of going into a store and being unable to find a sales person who knows enough about the products to help you make a selection. Make sure your online customers don’t have this frustrating experience with you and your site.

Be true to your customers. If you want to hype up your products and services, provide guarantees. The more satisfied customers you get, the bigger probability there is that they will recommend you. Generally, people will trust someone they know, and when that someone recommends you, then you’re a shoe-in. They will go to your site and check it out for themselves and then they, too, will be given a chance to experience what the others have experienced from you. Make sure to be consistent in the service you provide.

Another tip in getting a customer to trust you quickly is to provide them with an escape hatch. Show them that you are not there to trap them. Keep a clean list that would enable them to unsubscribe anytime they want. Elaborate your web form by providing information on how to unsubscribe from the list. Guarantee them that they can let go of the service whenever they want to. Many are wary that they may be stuck for life and would have to abandon their e-mail accounts when they get pestered with spam.

Remember that when you get the trust of your clients, don’t lose that trust. If you do anything with their e-mail addresses, like sell them or give them out, you will lose many members of your list as well as potential members. The quickest way to gain the trust of your subscribers is when someone they trust recommends you. Since you never know who that will be, treat EVERYONE with the same respect, courtesy and outstanding service.

I Never Met A Man I Did Not Like

A magic way to win more friendships that no one can resist, even hardened criminals can be won over this way.

"I never met a man I did not like," said Will Rogers. Many people thought this was just another funny Rogers. Will was famous as a funny-man, but he was also a wise philosopher and he could be most serious when he wanted.

"Of course I don't approve of all the things that people do," he said, "but there is some goodness in all of us." He continued, "If you know a man well enough you can always find something good in him and you can always find something interesting about him. It is just a matter of what you are looking for!"

"But what about the narrow-minded people? What about gossips? The people who do petty, mean little things? Do you like them, too?" he was asked. "I once read somewhere," he said, "where someone asked Abe Lincoln that same question, why he refused to get mad at the people who abused him, ridiculed him and tried to discredit him."

"Lincoln replied that people's actions spring from their character and that many factors beyond their control went into making up their character, where they were born, the people they had associated with, and a lot of other things." "Therefore,' said Lincoln, 'you shouldn't become angry with a person who blocks your path any more than you would with a tree which the wind blew across the road.'"

Will Rogers had no more reason for hating a person who happened to have been unfortunate enough to have acquired a habit of gossip than he did for hating a person who was foolish enough to neglect his teeth. He didn't like gossip. Few people do, and he didn't like pettiness. He looked upon them as foolish behavior rather than evil behavior.

I am convinced that Will Rogers really did like every person he ever met. There is an interesting thing about liking people, and that is they in turn like you. If you must start a rumor about somebody start it by saying, "I sure like that person."

This gets back to them and they say, "Well, I always liked him, too." Another funny thing about gossip is that if they tell you things about others, you can just bet they will tell others things about you.

While there is always a temptation to listen to gossip, just remember while you are on the listening end this time with this gossiper, the next time you will be on the receiving end when the gossiper gets elsewhere.

Beware of the Gossip! Avoid the company of the gossip. Don't give them a chance to be with you, find something out about you, then carry that story into another circle.

I am convinced that this trait of his character was largely responsible for Will Rogers being the most universally liked person I have ever heard about. Will Rogers liked everybody and everybody liked Will Rogers!

Sixth Sense: Intuition As A Powerful Success Tool

New entrepreneurs, as well as those are already involved in various ventures, confront seemingly insurmountable obstacles every day. Not only can these incidents be mind-boggling, but most involve totally unfamiliar concepts. Most people have never encountered some of these situations, nor do they have any understanding of how to approach a solution or whatever action may be required. It's true there are many coaches on various subjects, all kinds of books and training materials, college level training, and many other ways to gain knowledge about every conceivable subject. What good is this, however, if you must make some decision in a hurry? Where's the time for a class; where's the time for a learning curve? We must often use our inner resources to make instant decisions without the 100% knowledge base every decision-maker prefers. Usually this just isn't possible.

What are some of these abilities we all possess without realizing it? Inner qualities useful to all at every hour or minute may be considered as self-empowerment. This involves each person taking care of herself without farming this duty out to others. Rather than totally rely on doctors to treat illness properly, for instance, become educated on your problems so you can ask the right questions and guide your healthcare providers on the best course of treatment for you. The same is true of educational issues for you or your children: become knowledgeable about local school issues and be active in groups working to improve learning for you and your family. You can carry this idea into maintaining your home, auto, and all other aspects of your life. Don't ask others to do everything for you; at some point you will have to act on your own. Be prepared.

Self-empowerment contains concepts that may be uncomfortable for many. Things like using your sixth sense, gut feeling, intuition, and other relatively new ideas are often met with skepticism from every quarter. Health professionals, psychology practitioners, therapists, religious leaders, and many others who consider themselves quite knowledgeable in some subject area may feel threatened by the growing ability of individuals to help themselves. After all, there are usually fees (MONEY) involved in using the services of these skeptics. I would look askance at any idea that might reduce my income, wouldn't you? Our society has always taught us to respect and accept the authority of professionals and allow them to take unquestioning charge of our lives. Our entire power structure is based on blind acceptance, and even to think of questioning "experts" is a threat to our existing structure. The increasing complexity of everything we do, however, demands a totally different way of looking at things.

As an example of what not to do, let's use a turkey who wanted to better himself. Turkey could not get enough energy to fly to the top of a nearby tree. He discussed his problem with a bull who suggested Turkey eat some bull dung which was loaded with vitamins and other good stuff. Turkey did this and, after a few days, he was able to reach the top of the tree. A farmer saw him and shot Turkey out of the tree. The moral: B**S can get you to the top but it can't make you stay there!

And so it is with entrepreneurs struggling in today's world. The same old methods and ideas will not sustain you in your business or your life. You need all the means available inside of you. You need to be open to new ideas.

There is some thought about an inner intelligence each of us possesses. When activated by us, this is a very powerful force that will clear away old problems of stress, anxiety, shame, anger, fear, and grief. Releasing these problems makes it possible for us to achieve the benefits of personal power and energy. This inner power was introduced in ancient cultures through initiation rituals which were supposed to activate the inner powers. The power is within us all; we just have to look inward to help ourselves.

Like an athlete training to do their best through running, all kinds of physical training, and continuing practice and repetition of their specialty, so must every entrepreneur constantly train and fine-tune all of the inner abilities they have. In a seminar at the University of Michigan, Oscar Britton, of Ford Motor Company, said, "Individuals have it within their power to create a different future, to choose how they want to live, and who they want to be."

He outlined five ways to activate these powers:

1. Self appreciation. It is important to know what you're good at, to develop a sense of self-dignity.

2. Vision. Vision, the starting point for moving ahead, inspires individuals to proceed despite fear.

3. Power of purpose. Confidence is directly linked to a sense of purpose. Although purpose is not a panacea, it makes living worthwhile. Life matters when you have a purpose.

4. Commitment. This "heartfelt promise to yourself" will not let you back down.

5. Contribution. For those who live by the principle of contribution, reward follows service; getting follows giving. Life is best when we're happily and willingly contributing to others.

Good decisions and quality of life depend on making correct choices. We are discussing significant choices between conventional thinking and different ways of dealing with life situations. Current scientific thinking has moved from a totally materialistic base toward heavy involvement with spiritual things. There is a new body of spiritual-scientific thought which includes quantum physics as well as ancient Eastern and Asian thinking. Most impressive are new scientific experiments and theories that often show very old ideas have current significance. The reason they were not accepted as being important was a lack of mathematical proof. That proof is now available, and we hope this discussion will help those going through difficult times, or who can use these ideas to achieve a hassle-free lifestyle.

Even with the new scientific concepts, it is difficult for modern science to accept the consciousness concept because of its continuing acceptance of the old materialistic scientific way of thinking. Consciousness as a new scientific concept is discussed by Bruce Rosenblum and Fred Kuttner in Quantum Enigma: Physics Encounters Consciousness (Oxford University Press, 2008). Consciousness is now thought to play a significant part in the actual creation of the universe, so it is important to everything we use from our inner resources. In accord with quantum physics predictions, some kinds of beings seem to exist alongside us humans, as discussed in Supernatural, Meetings with the Ancient Teachers of Mankind (The Disinformation Company, 2007), by Graham Hancock. Hancock describes actual interviews where people in some places use hallucinogenic drugs of all kinds to achieve a state where images and ideas come to them when none of these are available in a normal state. They are in the forms of spirit guides, supernatural teachers, fairies, or (recently) aliens. Such ideas are beginning to emerge because of the realization that there may be an unbelievable amount of information recorded in the 97% of our DNA of which little is known. This 97% is known as "junk DNA." This designation makes it "supernatural" to modern scientists and they won't talk about it or experiment with it. Life spread across Earth almost instantaneously when temperature and other factors were right to accept it, so Nobel Prize winner Francis Crick (father of DNA theory) believes the original steps to facilitate life were taken somewhere else rather than on Earth. There was not enough time when life began here.

Because of the information in junk DNA, it could be that ancient teachers have always lived within each of us; we just have to enter altered states in order to see them. I'm in no way suggesting anyone use any sort of hallucinogen in order receive this information; you just need to know the knowledge may exist and may be available through other means like plugging in to the entire universe using Zero Point Field technology. Lynne McTaggert provides an excellent discussion of the Zero Point Field in The Field: The Quest For The Secret Force Of The Universe (Harper Paperbacks, 2008). We all exist in the Zero Point Field and everything, including all universal information, is available to us all. It's just a matter of our World View filters keeping us from using all knowledge there is.

Some will discount ideas—like using the subconscious mind, obtaining spiritual help from the Universe (God), and most recently the idea of tapping the complete knowledge of the universe through quantum physics discoveries like the Zero Point Field—as being sacrilegious or opposed to atheist thinking. My personal introduction to these powerful inner personal mechanisms was during a time of extreme difficulty. They have successfully helped me achieve success in the face of overwhelming opposing forces including the doctors repeatedly saying a loved one would surely die. I'm a 1,000% believer in this kind of thinking, and my advice is to try what you understand about some of these ideas and see how they work. Not everyone will succeed because one must have faith in the ultimate outcome.

Another inner element contained within each of us is the "sixth sense," the title of this article. This is sometimes included in the field of Extrasensory (ESP) perception which is the ability to acquire information without using any of the physical senses. It has been studied extensively since the 1920s and has never been totally disproved. Unfortunately, none of the favorable experiments have so far been duplicated satisfactorily, so there is skepticism by the main body of scientists. Current popular belief is very strong, and perhaps a maverick scientist will soon be able to design a experiment that can be replicated, thus proving the validity of ESP and the techniques associated with it. Meanwhile, listen to your sixth sense; if there is nothing else to rely on it may be your only source of guidance if you need to take any action.

Intuition is another inner mechanism for solving problems. It is the apparent ability to acquire knowledge without a clear inference or reasoning process. The Oxford English Dictionary says, "It is the immediate apprehension of an object by the mind without the intervention of any reasoning process." Abella Arthur, a well-known psychic, says, "Intuition is a combination of historical (empirical) data, deep and heightened observation and an ability to cut through the thickness of surface reality. Intuition is like a slow motion machine that captures data instantaneously and hits you like a ton of bricks. Intuition is a knowing, a sensing that is beyond the conscious understanding — a gut feeling. Intuition is not pseudo-science."

Some business coaches are saying that the development of business intuition is an essential skill for the time-starved 21st Century entrepreneur. This can be an answer to the demands on all of us for instant gratification. Intuition is immediate, but it requires scientific development over a period of time to be effective on a useful basis.

Here are three things you can do to develop Business Intuition:

1. Practice meditation daily. This is hard for me to do, but it only requires setting a specific time for 15 or 20 minutes by myself.

2. Most entrepreneurs plan their day in some way. To develop intuition, put these plans on paper and note situations where you know what will happen, be it good or bad.

3. Make a separate Intuition Journal and write all your intuitions for later study and evaluation.

A lot of people will say they don't have time to do these things, but consider how much future time you will save by going a little bit out of your way now. Before you throw out intuition as being too impractical, realize it was one of Carl Jung's four ego functions. They were Intuition, Sensation, Feeling, and Thinking. He felt that in any individual, one of these would be primary with the others less developed. The key is to develop enough intuition to be helpful; all intuition, unbalanced by the other functions, would probably result in poor decisions.

Here are a few ways to effectively cultivate and use your intuition:

1. Pay close attention to what your intuition tells you—listen to those inner nudges.

2. Realize how intuition communicates with you—mental images, feelings (gut), or thoughts.

3. Ask for help; intuition will not know you want it unless you ask yourself.

4. Act on your intuition; start with low-risk situations

5. Use your logical left brain to enhance what you get from the intuitive right side.

A recent article in the LA Times about gut feelings ended with these words, "Evolution did not equip Homo sapiens with ready access to insights that transcend our personal experience. But somehow, we'd better get over our stubborn bias toward "thinking" with our gut, which is to say, not thinking at all. And that's the truth." I mention this so you can see what some skeptic journalists feel about anything outside conventional thinking. Read what they say, read what supporters say, then decide what to do. I hope you will at least consider some of these unconventional ideas. I personally know they work under some circumstances, "if you believe they will work." So, let's look at some "gut instinct" ideas.

The New Scientist reports promising research about the validity of snap judgment (gut instinct). This study was done in January, 2007.

The researchers say our initial instincts are often right, and higher-level thinking sometimes takes us away from the correct answer. Subjects were given half a second to answer a question and 95% were correct. When given a full second, only 80% were right. Further time extensions resulted in descending levels of accuracy. People doing the research say there is a biological basis for these findings. An image picked up by the eyes first gets processed by a region at the back of the brain known as the primary visual cortex. This area of the brain is thought to be involved in subconscious processing. The information then travels from this visual processing area to both the parietal region (which recognizes shapes) and the decision-making frontal cortex. Researchers believe the higher-level mental processing that takes place in the parietal region and frontal cortex can initially make us mentally reorient an object to help decide what it is. This re-orienting may cause our minds to classify the oddly oriented symbol as the same as all the others, making it temporarily harder to pick out. This explains why people perform worse when given an additional amount of time to do so. When given a short time, they only have their subconscious as a guide; when given more time, they can override the re-orientation.

Another experiment, reported by Telegraph.co.uk, says new brain-imaging shows the higher the level of uncertainty, the more likely it is that a gut reaction is correct. Uncertainty calls up the brain's emotional center which is different from the logical center used when most data is known. This kind of research may lead to understanding wide social outcomes. An example is investors in every country hold too many shares they are familiar with, from their own countries, and do not diversify their holdings by buying more ambiguous foreign stocks. The Sale is More Complex Today

The entire process of selling today is more complex than it has ever been before. It used to be that we would make a single call on a single buyer who would make a single decision on our product or offering. In this simple form of selling, we used the attention/interest/ desire/action (AIDA) model of sales presentation and focused intensely on numerous different ways of closing the sale. Then, once we had made the sale, in many cases we never saw the customer again.

Everything Has Changed

Today, however, everything is different. Today we must make multiple calls, an average of five or six, in order to make the sale. We deal with multiple decision makers in an organization, each of whom can influence the purchase. Much of the sale takes place when we are not present. Sometimes we never even meet the final decision maker who signs the check. And it is not unusual for a sale to be derailed at the last minute by something completely unexpected.

The Competition is Fierce

If that weren't enough, there is more competition than ever before and it is more determined and resolute than it has ever been in the past. Not only must we compete on the basis of price, quality, services, capabilities, financing and warranties with many other vendors of our product or service, but we must also compete with every other vendor of every other product or service who is striving to get the same customer dollar that we are after. Our competitors are extremely determined, driven the same as we are by tight markets and careful customers. They are committed to starting earlier, working harder, and staying up later thinking of ways to take our customers away from us.

Customers Are Overwhelmed

Our prospective customers are beset on all sides by every conceivable sales offering. Because they are drowning in details, options and choices, they are in no hurry to make up their minds. The Determinant of Your Success

Perhaps the most powerful single factor in your financial success is your beliefs about yourself and money. We call this the Law of Belief. It says simply this: Whatever you believe, with feeling, becomes your reality.

What Successful People Believe

Whatever you intensely believe becomes your reality. That we have a tendency to block out any information coming in to us that is inconsistent with our reality. What we've discovered is that successful people absolutely believe that they have the ability to succeed. And they will not entertain, think about, or talk about the possibilities that they'll fail. They do not even consider the possibility of failure.

Positive Thinking Versus Positive Knowing

You always act in a matter consistent with your beliefs. The most important belief system you can build is a prosperity consciousness where you absolutely believe that you are going achieve your financial goals. We call this positive knowing versus positive thinking. Positive thinking can sometimes be wishing or hoping. But positive knowing is when you absolutely know that no matter what, you will be successful.

First, continually repeat to yourself the words, pictures and thoughts consistent with your dreams and goals. Whatever you repeat often enough, over and over, becomes a new belief.

Second, set a goal for yourself to think and talk only about the things that you want for the next 24 hours. This will be one of the hardest things you ever do. But if you can keep your mind on what you want and off of what you don't want for 24 hours, you can begin to change your entire future.

The Endgame to Selling

In golf, there is a saying that, "You drive for show, but you putt for dough." In selling, you prospect and present for show, but you overcome customer skepticism and gain commitment for dough. Your ability to answer objections and get the sale is the true test of how good you really are as a salesperson.

The True Test of Selling

This is perhaps the most stressful and challenging part of the sales process. It's where the rubber meets the road. It is your ability to answer the questions that the prospect puts to you and overcome his natural reluctance to make a commitment that wraps up the sales process. It is also the part of the sales process that salespeople dislike the most and which customers find the most stressful.

Plan It in Advance

The end game of selling must be carefully thought through and planned in advance so that you are thoroughly prepared to bring the sales conversation to its natural conclusion at the earliest and most appropriate moment. Fortunately, this is a skill, like riding a bicycle or typing with a typewriter, and you can learn it through study and practice.

Handling Objections Comes First

Handling objections and closing the sale are two different parts of the sales process but they are so close together that this chapter will discuss them as a single function. Just as there are reasons why people buy a product, there are reasons why they don't. Often answering an objection or removing an obstacle is the critical element in making the sale. You can answer the objection and close the sale simultaneously.

Make It a Reason to Buy

Objections can be turned into reasons for buying. Just as there is a primary reason for buying a product, a hot button, there is a primary objection that stops the person from buying it. If you can emphasize the one and remove the other, the sale falls together naturally.

Smaller Products Versus Larger Products

In selling smaller products or services, where you can prospect and make a complete presentation in the first meeting, your approach to closing will be different from that required if you are selling a larger product in a multi-call sale that stretches over several weeks or months.

Ask For the Order

In the shorter, smaller sale, the prospect knows everything necessary to make a buying decision at the end of your presentation. Your aim should be to answer any lingering questions and then ask for the order. In the larger sale, you may have to meet with the prospect several times before the prospect is in a position to make a buying decision. You will have to be more patient and persistent.

Action Exercises

Here are two things you can do immediately to put these ideas into action.

First, prepare yourself in advance for the endgame of selling by anticipating anything the customer might offer as a reason for not buying. Be ready.

Second, look for the hot button, the reason the customer will buy, and press it. Meanwhile, find out his major reason for not buying and remove it.

The Invitational Close

The Invitational Close is simple, low-key, classy and powerful. You use it at the end of a sales conversation to conclude the transaction. It is preceded by a Trial Close such as: "Mr. Prospect, do you have any questions or concerns that I haven't covered up to now?" Or, "Mr. Prospect, does this make sense to you, so far?"

Probe for Lingering Objections

You ask these questions to be doubly sure that the prospect has no final objections lurking in the back of his mind that would block the closing of the sales process. You then invite the customer to make a buying decision by saying, "If you like what I've shown you, why don't you give it a try?"

Invite the Customer to Buy

Inviting the customer to buy is very powerful. This is a gentle way of nudging the customer into taking action. "Why don't you give it a try?" If you are selling services, you can ask, "Why don't you give us a try?" If you want to be more bold and direct, you can simply ask, "Why don't you take it?"

Change Your Wording

One of my seminar graduates doubled his sales by changing his words in the endgame of selling. After his sales presentation he would ask the prospect if he had any additional questions or concerns. If the prospect said "no," he would then ask, "Well, if you like it, why don't you take it?"

He was amazed to find that many prospects could not think of a good reason not to go ahead with his offering immediately. Both his closing ratio and his income soared.

Action Exercises

Here is something you can do immediately to put these ideas into action.

The next time you complete your sales presentation, simply issue an invitation to the customer to make a decision. "Why don't you give it a try?"

Increase Your Earnings 1000%!

Here's an exercise for you; imagine that it's possible for you to earn ten times your current annual wage. If you're earning $25,000, imagine for a moment that it's possible for you to earn $250,000, a 1000% increase.

Believe In Yourself

The first reaction of most people to that exercise is to smile briefly and then to begin thinking about why it isn't possible. One man said to me, "If you knew how many years it's taken for me to get to what I'm earning today you wouldn't be suggesting that I could earn ten times as much."

There Are No Excuses

Mark Twain once wrote that there are a thousand excuses for every failure but never a good reason. The tragedy of the average person is that whereas his or her main preoccupation seems to be money, or the lack thereof, the average person has the inherent potential to earn far more than he or she is doing currently.

Can Someone Be 10x Better?

Is the manager earning $250,000 per year ten times as smart as the manager earning $25,000? 10 times as experienced? Does he or she work 10 times harder? Of course not. None of these are physically or mentally possible, but there are people in every business earning many times more than others with the same average age, experience and intelligence.

I.Q. Doesn't Really Matter

In fact, a few years ago in New York, a thousand men and women were selected at random and tested for I.Q. Between the one having the highest I.Q. in this sample and the one with the lowest, there was a difference of only 2 1/2 times. But between the person earning the most, who by the way, was not the one with the highest I.Q. and the one earning the least, who was not the one with the lowest I.Q., there was a difference of 100X in income.

Action Exercises

Here are two things you can do to start increasing your earnings:

First, identify the highest earning, most successful people in your field and find out what it is that they are doing differently from others who aren't doing as well. Resolve to copy them every day.

Second, set a goal to double your earnings over the next two or three years and then figure out what you'll have to do to achieve it. Get started!

Third, you need a plan to succeed. I'm always amazed at how many people fail because they just don't have a plan. And having a plan isn't enough. Just like an airplane pilot you must make course corrections to arrive at your destination - your goals.

Thoughts Become Physical Equivalent

Today's lesson comes from Napoleon Hill's Philosophy. It is a philosophy that has shaped my life and many lives around the world for the better.

Napoleon Hill quotes a friend of his, Earl Nightingale. Here is what he said about Napoleon Hill's philosophy, "I don't think a day has gone by in the last five years that the influence of the philosophy of success has not shaped my life in every way. Coming upon it as I did, after 20 years of earnest seeking for the answers, was like being rescued from the sea." I might add that Earl Nightingale knew something about being rescued from the sea as he was one of the few survivors blown into the sea when the Arizona was bombed on December 7, 1941. "It is said that in every life spent in earnest study, there comes an illumination so brilliant as to remove all shadows of doubt."

Incredible as it may seem, there is one bit of wisdom that has passed down from antiquity unchanged and unchallenged. Great thinkers from times of beginning have uttered it as if it were their own personal discovery . . . "and so it was."

We can read it a thousand times and have it shouted in our faces, but for some strange, self-limiting reason, we can't discover it until we are ready to discover it.

Not very shaking is it? Just 12 words that still give me chicken skin when I think of the power they contain.

The Nature of Character

Abraham Lincoln was very concerned with character, but he was also aware of the importance of having a good reputation. He explained the difference this way: "Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing."

Put another way, your reputation is what people think of you. Your character is what you actually are.

In a world preoccupied with image, it's easy to worry too much about our reputation and too little about our character. Building a reputation is largely a public-relations project; building character requires us to focus on our values and actions. Noble rhetoric and good intentions aren't enough.

What we're looking for is moral strength based on ethical principles. Character is revealed by actions, not words, especially when there's a gap between what we want to do and what we should do and when doing the right thing costs more than we want to pay.

Our character is revealed by how we deal with pressures and temptations. But it's also disclosed by everyday actions, including what we say and do when we think no one is looking and we won't get caught.

The way we treat people we think can't help or hurt us (like housekeepers, waiters, and secretaries), tells more about our character than how we treat people we think are important. People who are honest, kind, and fair only when there's something to gain shouldn't be confused with people of real character who demonstrate these qualities habitually, under all circumstances.

Character is not a fancy coat we put on for show. It's who we really are.

This is where freedom comes in, this is also where the problem begins with most people. They permit what is happening around them to determine how they think. They have become the play-thing for outside forces.

Ninety percent of the population wish positive but think negative. Their negative thoughts puts them in a negative vibration which by law determines what is attracted into their lives. As a creative individual you will continually attract good things into your life by thinking positive thoughts and expecting the best life has to offer. You deserve it.

Investing Trading Capital Gains Losses Tax Guide

Capital Gains and Losses. What's a capital asset, and how much do I have to pay when I sell? Find out how to report your capital gains and losses on your taxes.

What is a capital gain?

A capital gain is what the tax law calls the profit when you sell a capital asset, which is property such as stocks, bonds, mutual fund shares, and real estate.

What's the difference between a short-term gain and a long-term gain?

A very big difference. The law divides investment profits into different classes determined by the calendar. Short-term gains come from the sale of property owned one year or less; long-term gains come from the sale of property held more than one year. Short-term gains are taxed at your maximum tax rate; long-term gains are taxed at a lower rate.

What is the holding period?

That's the period you hold the property before you sell it. When figuring the holding period, the day you buy property does not count, but the day you sell it does. So, if you bought a stock on April 16, 2006, your holding period began on April 17. Thus, April 16, 2007, would mark the end of the first year. If you sold on that day, you would have a short-term gain or loss. A sale on April 17 would produce long-term results, though, since you would have held the asset for more than one year.

How much do I have to pay?

The tax rate you pay depends on whether your gain is short-term or long-term.

Short-term profits are taxed at your maximum tax rate, just like your salary, up to 35%.

Long-term gains are treated much better. Long-term gains are taxed at a flat 15% except for taxpayers in the 10% or 15% bracket. For low-bracket taxpayers, the long-term capital gains rate is just 5% for 2007 gains and drops to 0% on January 1, 2008. (There are exceptions, of course, since this is tax law: Long-term gains on collectibles-such as stamps, antiques and coins-are taxed at 28%, unless you're in the 10% or 15% bracket, in which case the 10% or 15% rate applies; and gains on real estate attributable to depreciation - since depreciation deductions reduce your cost basis, they also increase your profit dollar for dollar - are taxed at 25%, unless you're in the 10% or 15% bracket. And stocks sold by kids under 19-under 24 if they don't pay half their support-won't qualify for the 0% rate, beginning in 2008. Gain on stocks they sell will be taxed at their parents' rate.)

What is a capital loss?

A capital loss is a loss on the sale of a capital asset such as a stock, bond, mutual fund or real estate. As with capital gains, capital losses are divided by the calendar into short- and long-term losses.

Can I deduct my capital losses?

Losses on your investments are first used to offset capital gains of the same type. So, short-term losses are first deducted against short-term gains and long-term losses are deducted against long-term gains. Net losses of either type can then be deducted against the other kind of gain. So, for example, if you have $2,000 of short-term loss and only $1,000 of short-term gain, the extra $1,000 of loss can be deducted against long-term gain. If short- and long-term losses exceed all of your capital gains for the year, up to $3,000 of the excess loss can be deducted against other kinds of income, including your salary, for example, and interest income.

Tax Strategies for Investors and Traders

The volatile securities markets make year-end planning challenging for investors. As the year-end approaches, you should consider the following moves to make the best tax use of paper losses and actual losses from your stock market investments.

Sell at a loss to offset earlier gains.

If you have taken down gains earlier in the year from sales of stock held for held for more than one year (long-term capital gains) or from sales of stock held for one year or less (short-term capital gains), look through your portfolio to see about selling some of those shares that now show a paper loss. The best tax strategy is to sell enough of these to shelter your earlier gains and generate a $3,000 loss. Selling to yield this amount of loss is beneficial from a tax perspective because a $3,000 capital loss (but no more) can offset a similar amount of ordinary income each year.

For example, if you have $10,000 of capital gain from the sale of stocks you sold earlier this year and you also have several losing positions, including shares in XYZ Corp., in which you are showing a $15,000 loss. From the tax viewpoint, you should consider selling enough of your XYZ shares to recognize a $13,000 loss. Your capital gains will be offset entirely, and you will have a $3,000 loss to offset a that amount of ordinary income.

If you believe these shares showing a paper loss (the XYZ shares) still have the potential to turn around and eventually generate a profit, you can sell and then repurchase the shares without forfeiting the loss deduction only if you avoid the wash-sale rules. This means you must buy the new shares outside of the period that begins 30 days before and ends 30 days after the sale of the loss stock. However, note that if you expect the price of the shares showing a paper loss to rise quickly, your tax savings from taking the loss may not be worth the potential investment gain you may lose by waiting more than 30 days to repurchase the shares.

You can use earlier year losses to offset gains you would benefit from taking. If you have capital losses on sales earlier in the year, consider whether you should take capital gains on some stocks that you still hold. For example, if you have appreciated stocks that you would like to sell, but don't want to sell if it will cause you to have taxable gain this year, consider just selling enough shares to offset your earlier-in-the-year capital losses (except for $3,000 of those which can be used to offset ordinary income). You should consider selling appreciated stocks now if you believe those stocks have reached (or are close to) the peak price and you also believe that you can invest the proceeds from the sale in other property that will give you a better rate of return in the future.

For example, if you have $20,000 of long-term capital losses from your previous year stock transactions, and $4,000 of short-term capital gains, and you don't have other transactions involving securities or other capital assets for the previous year, you'll end the year with a $16,000 long-term capital loss, of which only $3,000 can be used to shelter ordinary income. The $13,000 balance of the loss could be used to offset gain on appreciated stock that you want to sell but which you would not sell now if you had to pay tax on the gain recognized on the sale.

If this applies to you, and your holdings showing a paper gain consist of stocks you haven't held for more than one year, as well as stocks you have held for more than one year, you should consider selling those stocks on which you will have short-term gain first, and then stocks that would yield long-term gain. This way, you'll be in a better position to wind up with gain taxed at favorable rates when you sell other stocks with paper gains. To the extent possible, you should also try to use long-term capital losses to offset short-term capital gains. This can be done, however, only if the total of your long-term capital losses is more than your long-term capital gains. Deferring long-term capital gains until next year is one way of achieving this goal.

As individual taxpayers can carry over capital losses indefinitely, there is no reason to sell appreciated stocks just to have offsetting gains. If you don't have a better investment for the proceeds of a sale of these stocks, don't sell them. You can carry over your capital losses to next year when you may have a better chance to make use of the losses. You can also offset another $3,000 of the carried over losses against ordinary income next year (and in succeeding years if the full amount of the capital loss carryover is not used next year).

When should gain on the sale of stock this year be taken this year even if you don't have offsetting losses? A previous year sale of paper-gain stocks you have held for more than one year may make sense (even if you haven't recognized losses) if you will be in the 15% bracket this year, for example, due to large business net operating losses that will offset most of your ordinary income, but expect to be in the 28% bracket in the following year. By selling this year rather than next, part or all of the gain will be taxed at a maximum rate of only 10% (instead of 20%).

A Tale Of Two Start-Ups

The importance of selling during the start-up stage of business was exemplified some years ago by a profile of two entrepreneurs in Success Magazine.

One, a New York realtor, wanted to broker surplus office space through the Internet. He spent a year and most of $10,000 he had saved to build an impressive website. He told the magazine that he believed his site would be so good that it would make him "the next Jeff Bezos."

His marketing plan was to lure customers to his website by offering free ads for a year and then renewing them at $59.95 annually. When the website was done, he was happy - until he activated it and discovered that nobody was rushing in to take advantage of his free offer.

He spent the little money he had left on a few desperate marketing schemes, but to no avail. He had exhausted all his resources building a professional-looking site with lots of bells and whistles, but he had never tested his basic sales assumption - that he could attract lots of free postings and then convert them into paid advertisers.

Meanwhile, another entrepreneur, a car repairman, had a very different business idea. He thought he could sell neon lights that attached to a car's undercarriage. He called his venture Street Glow Inc.

When he started making this toy in 1990, he had only $1,000 to invest in it. He spent about $350 installing two crude prototypes onto his own car and the car of a friend. And then he spent all of his spare time and his remaining $650 selling.

He didn't lease office space; he worked from his home. And he spent most of his time traveling to custom auto shops and automobile-themed events, trying to make sales. At first, people were curious but most were hesitant to buy. After talking to them, he made adjustments to his product, his pricing, and the way he presented it.

He worked fast. He took enough deposits to build the systems ordered, delivered them, and then reinvested the profits in selling more systems.

For months he earned nothing, because he was reinvesting his cash flow into sales. But at about the one-year mark, he was able to start pocketing profits. At that point, he began fixing up a shop, buying some new tools, and ordering inventory.

By devoting his attention to selling first and taking care of the other, secondary business concerns later, he ensured that his fledgling enterprise would not suffer the normal (and normally lethal) cash shortages most first-year businesses encounter.

By 2002 (the last year financial data was available for this privately held company), Street Glow Inc. had garnered $23 million in revenues and had shown a consistent profit, year after year.

The Habit of Going the Extra Mile

An important principle of success in all walks of life and in all occupations is a willingness to GO THE EXTRA MILE; which means the rendering of more and better service than that for which one is paid, and giving it in a positive mental attitude.

Search wherever you will for a single sound argument against this principle, and you will not find it; nor will you find a single instance of enduring success which was not attained in part by its application.

The principle is not the creation of man. It is a part of Nature's handiwork, for it is obvious that every living creature below the intelligence of man is forced to apply the principle in order to survive.

We may disregard the principle if we choose, but we cannot do so and at the same time enjoy the fruits of enduring success.

Observe how Nature applies this principle in the production of food that grows from the soil, where the farmer is forced to GO THE EXTRA MILE by clearing the land, plowing it, and planting the seed at the right time of the year, for none of which he receives any pay in advance..

But, observe that if he does his work in harmony with Nature's laws, and performs the necessary amount of labor, Nature takes over the job where the farmer's labor ends, germinates the seed he plants and develops it into a crop of food.

And, observe thoughtfully this significant fact: For every grain of wheat or corn he plants in the soil Nature yields him perhaps a hundred grains, thus enabling him to benefit by the law of increasing returns.

Nature GOES THE EXTRA MILE by producing enough of everything for her needs, together with a surplus for emergencies and waste; for example, the fruit on the trees, the bloom from which the fruit is grown, frogs in the pond and fish in the seas.

Nature GOES THE EXTRA MILE by producing enough of every living thing to insure the perpetuation of the species, allowing for emergencies of every kind. If this were not true the species of all living things would soon vanish.

Some believe that the beasts of the jungle and the birds of the air live without labor, but thoughtful people know that this is not true. It is true that Nature provides the sources of supply of food for every living thing, but every creature must labor before it may partake of that food.

Thus we see that Nature discourages the habit which some have acquired of trying to get something for nothing.

The advantages of the habit of GOING THE EXTRA MILE are definite and understandable. Let us examine some of them and be convinced:

The habit brings the individual to the favorable attention of those who can and will provide opportunities for self-advancement. It tends to make one indispensable, in many different human relationships, and it therefore enables one to command more than average compensation for personal services.

It leads to mental growth and to physical skill and perfection in many forms of endeavor, thereby adding to one's earning capacity.

Save Massive Time by Building a Promotion Briefcase

Promoting your site is where most of your time will be spent. If you are organized and armed with a promotion briefcase, your time will be far better managed. When submitting your site to classifieds, directories, engines, free for alls, forums, newsgroups etc. you will find that many have different requirements.

Some will only allow 7 keywords where others allow 18 or more. You will also find the fields that you will enter your description in all vary. Some allow 4 lines while others allow 10. With a fully stocked briefcase you can copy/paste the appropriate information in the appropriate fields and save yourself keying time and cut your error margin down considerably.

Simply list all the information about your site that is most often requested and save it in a file where you can access it easily. It's a good idea to open your briefcase when you are ready to promote making it handy to copy/paste when necessary. It is much quicker to develop your information only once and copy/paste later.

Below is a list of items that should be in your briefcase.

Include contact information:

Company name
Address
Phone numbers
Fax number
Contact name and email address

Create a meaningful title and short description (under 50 words) for each page. You will need to index every page on your site, so make a list of these pages.

A small unanimated GIF graphic to represent your site. Try to stay less than 1 inch high by 2 inches wide. Should be legible.

Write a description of your site in each of the following word counts: 10, 15, 25, 35, 50, 75, 100.

Make a list of keywords in order of importance. Some sites only allow a select number of keywords. With the list being in order by importance, you can just copy/paste the beginning of your list, feeling certain the words you submitted are key.

Write the purpose of your site in three different word counts - 15, 30 and 75 words so when asked for this information all you have to do is copy/paste.

Include a description of the audience for your site or its products as well. If for instance you are submitting your newsletter or submitting anything about your product or service you may be required to describe your audience.

You now have the basics for what you need in your briefcase. You'll find it an incredible time saver! Good luck
